Chapter 10 - The Brother Who Came BackEnzo had not escaped dramatically.

No tunnel.

No gunfight.

No helicopter.

Someone had bribed a transport officer.

During a hospital transfer, a vehicle had been redirected for seven minutes.

Seven minutes was enough.

By the time authorities realized what had happened, Enzo was gone.

Carlo immediately reverted.

I watched it happen.

Phone calls.

Security.

Commands.

Cars.

Weapons.

The old machinery returned as if it had merely been sleeping.

That frightened me.

Not Enzo.

Carlo.

“Stop.”

He looked at me.

“I need to handle this.”

“Police are handling it.”

“They will not find him before he comes for us.”

“You do not know that.”

“I know my brother.”

He called Matteo.

Within hours, former Ferretti men were moving across Naples.

I understood why.

I also understood where it could lead.

That night, Carlo stood in our apartment loading a handgun.

I stared.

“No.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“You are not doing this.”

“Adriana.”

“You promised that life was over.”

“This is different.”

“It always is.”

His expression hardened.

“My brother kidnapped you.”

“And he went to prison.”

“He tried to kill me.”

“And you survived.”

“He will try again.”

“Then let police protect us.”

Carlo laughed bitterly.

“You think police can protect you every second?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“We live.”

His eyes flashed.

“I cannot risk you.”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The cage.”

His face changed.

“You said you would not turn my dreams into another cage. But this is bigger than dreams.”

I stepped closer.

“You cannot build a prison around our life every time you are afraid.”

“I love you.”

“Then trust me enough to be afraid beside me.”

Silence.

His hands lowered.

I touched the gun.

“Put it down.”

For a long moment, Carlo did not move.

Then he unloaded it.

Locked it away.

Called the police.

And gave them everything he knew about Enzo.

That choice probably saved his life.

Two days later, Enzo contacted me.

Not Carlo.

Me.

A text.

You always wanted Carlo to choose a different life. Ask yourself why he chose it only after meeting you.

I showed Carlo immediately.

Old Adriana might have hidden it.

Old Carlo might have confiscated my phone.

Neither happened.

“What does he want?” I asked.

“To divide us.”

“Then disappointing him seems appropriate.”

Carlo smiled faintly.

Another message came.

An address.

And:

Ask Carlo what happened to Father.

Carlo stared.

I looked at him.

“What happened to your father?”

His silence told me there was something.

“Carlo.”

“My father did not die naturally.”

Cold entered the room.

“What happened?”

“He was killed.”

“By whom?”

“Enzo.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Enzo was twenty-six.”

Carlo sat down.

“Our father had become unstable. Violent. Paranoid.”

“Why was Enzo not arrested?”

“Because we covered it up.”

There it was.

Another Ferretti secret.

“Why?”

“Because Father was about to kill Matteo.”

I said nothing.

“Enzo stopped him.”

“By killing him.”

“Yes.”

“And you protected Enzo.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does he hate you?”

Carlo laughed without humor.

“Because I used the secret later.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“When Enzo tried to take control of part of the organization, I reminded him what would happen if authorities learned the truth.”

“You blackmailed your own brother.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

Again.

Truth.

Ugly truth.

“I became my father in that moment,” Carlo said quietly. “I used family as leverage.”

That was the wound between them.

Not inheritance.

Not money.

Betrayal.

Enzo had saved Matteo.

Carlo had transformed that act into a chain.

“I understand why he hates you.”

Carlo nodded.

“So do I.”

“But that does not excuse what he did.”

“No.”

“What do we do?”

“We tell the prosecutor everything.”

“Even if it hurts you?”

“Yes.”

That afternoon, Carlo confessed the entire cover-up.

It created another legal storm.

But it also removed Enzo’s final leverage.

Three days later, Enzo appeared.

At the parking space.

Of course.

Carlo and I were leaving dinner when we saw him standing beside the red Fiat.

He looked thinner.

Tired.

No suit.

No charm.

Just a broken man.

Carlo moved in front of me.

Enzo laughed.

“Still protecting her.”

“Enzo.”

“Move.”

“No.”

“I am not here to hurt her.”

Police were already watching us from nearby.

Carlo had agreed to surveillance.

Enzo probably knew.

“Then why are you here?” I asked.

Carlo glanced back.

I stepped beside him.

Not behind.

Enzo noticed.

“Because this is where everything changed.”

He looked around.

“A parking space.”

He laughed bitterly.

“My brother destroyed an empire over a woman he met fighting over a parking space.”

“No,” I said.

Enzo looked at me.

“He destroyed it because he finally hated what it made him.”

“You think you changed him.”

“No.”

I took Carlo’s hand.

“He changed himself.”

Enzo stared at our joined hands.

Then at his brother.

“You used Father against me.”

Carlo’s voice broke.

“I know.”

“I saved Matteo.”

“I know.”

“And you threatened me with prison.”

“I know.”

“You were supposed to be my brother.”

“I know.”

For the first time, Carlo had no defense.

No explanation.

Only accountability.

“I am sorry.”

Enzo laughed.

Then cried.

Actually cried.

It was terrible to watch.

Years of hatred collapsing into grief.

“I hate you.”

Carlo nodded.

“I know.”

“I wanted you to lose everything.”

“I did.”

Enzo looked at me.

“No. You didn’t.”

Sirens approached.

Enzo reached inside his coat.

Carlo moved.

Police shouted.

Weapons raised.

My heart stopped.

But Enzo removed no gun.

Only a photograph.

Three boys.

Carlo.

Matteo.

Enzo.

Children.

Before power.

Before blood.

Before their father taught them love could become leverage.

Enzo handed it to Carlo.

Then raised his hands.

Police arrested him.

Carlo stood holding the photograph.

He did not speak for several minutes.

I held his hand.

Eventually, he whispered:

“I failed him.”

“You hurt him.”

Carlo looked at me.

“That is different.”

“You cannot rewrite it into something easier.”

His eyes filled.

“But you can decide what you do with it now.”

May you like

Carlo nodded.

And for the first time, he allowed himself to grieve not only the brother Enzo had become, but the brother he himself had failed to be.
