The first thing Julian Hale heard when he stepped into his mansion was his mother's scream. Not crying. Not calling his name. Screaming.

The first thing Julian Hale heard when he stepped into his mansion was his mother's scream.

Not crying.

Not calling his name.

Screaming.

A sound filled with absolute terror.

Julian froze just inside the glass doors leading to the backyard.

The bouquet of rare red roses slipped from his hand.

One by one, the flowers scattered across the polished marble floor.

Because right in front of him, in the glowing infinity pool, was his seventy-eight-year-old mother, Martha.

Her frail hands clung desperately to the edge.

Her soaked purple nightgown pulled her downward like an anchor.

"Please..." Martha coughed, struggling to keep her head above the water. "Someone... help me..."

Standing over her was Bianca Laurent.

Julian's fiancée.

The woman he had planned to surprise that evening.

The woman he believed would soon become part of his family.

But the woman standing beside that pool was a complete stranger.

Bianca stared down at Martha with an icy smile.

"Still pretending you're helpless?" she said quietly.

Julian's heart nearly stopped.

"What did you say?" Martha whispered.

Bianca leaned in.

"You heard me."

Martha shook her head.

"Bianca... please... help me out."

Instead, Bianca stepped forward and nudged Martha's fingers away from the edge with the tip of her heel.

"You actually thought Julian would choose you over me?"

Fear flooded Martha's eyes.

"He loves me. I'm his mother."

Bianca let out a quiet laugh.

"After I marry him, this house will finally be mine."

Julian's hands curled into tight fists.

The woman he intended to marry was threatening his mother.

His own mother.

But he stayed where he was.

Because he needed to hear every word.

Bianca glanced around to make sure they were alone.

Then she lowered her voice.

"You know what's really funny, Martha? No one believes an old woman who's starting to lose her memory."

Martha's expression changed.

"What are you talking about?"

Bianca smiled again.

"I've already been telling everyone your memory's getting worse."

Julian felt a chill run through him.

In that instant, he understood.

This wasn't an accident.

It was a carefully planned scheme.

A plan that had begun long before tonight.

Then Bianca spoke the one sentence that changed everything.

"After the wedding, you won't be around long enough to complain."

Julian stepped out of the shadows.

His voice was calm.

But unmistakably deadly.

"Go ahead," he said. "Say that again."

Bianca spun around.

The smile vanished from her face.

Because Julian Hale had heard every single word.

Chapter 1: The Cold Truth

The silence that followed Julian’s words was heavier than the humid night air. Bianca stood frozen by the edge of the infinity pool, her manicured hands trembling slightly. The icy, confident predator from a moment ago was gone, replaced by a deer caught in the blinding headlights of her own ruined future.

"Julian," Bianca stammered, taking a hesitant step backward. "Baby, it's not what it looks like. She slipped. I was trying to figure out how to pull her up without falling in myself."

Julian ignored her. He moved with a terrifying, deliberate calmness, stepping around the scattered red roses. He knelt by the pool, ignoring the expensive fabric of his tailored suit as the water soaked through the knees, and reached down. His strong hands gripped Martha’s forearms, pulling his coughing, shivering mother out of the water and onto the warm marble deck. He stripped off his suit jacket and wrapped it tightly around her trembling shoulders.

"I've got you, Mom. You're safe," he murmured, his voice softening only for her.

Martha clung to his shirt, tears mixing with the chlorinated water on her face. "She... she was going to let me drown, Julian."

"I know," Julian said. He stood up slowly, turning to face the woman he had almost married. The warmth in his dark eyes had been replaced by an arctic void. "Security," he spoke clearly into his smartwatch. "Get to the pool deck immediately."

"Julian, please!" Bianca shrieked, dropping the sweet facade entirely. "You're going to take the word of a senile old woman over mine? She's crazy! She provoked me!"

"I heard every word, Bianca," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "The wedding is off. Your access to my accounts is terminated. And if you ever come within a hundred yards of my mother again, I won't just ruin you—I'll bury you."

Two burly security guards burst through the glass doors.

"Escort Ms. Laurent off the property," Julian ordered, not breaking eye contact with Bianca. "She leaves with nothing but the clothes on her back."

Chapter 2: The Fallout

The sprawling Hale estate felt entirely different the next morning. The oppressive weight of Bianca's impending presence was gone, but the shock of her betrayal lingered in the polished hallways. Julian sat in his mahogany-paneled study, the remnants of a sleepless night evident in the dark circles under his eyes. Across from him sat Marcus Vance, his ruthless corporate attorney.

"Attempted murder is a high bar to prove without a confession, Julian," Marcus warned, reviewing the incident report Julian’s security team had drafted. "But elder abuse, reckless endangerment, and fraud? We can absolutely destroy her with those."

"I want her dismantled, Marcus," Julian said, staring out the window toward the pool. "She didn't just want my money. She wanted to eliminate the only family I have left. I need to know exactly who I let into my house."

Marcus nodded, tapping his pen on the leather desk pad. "I've already put my best private investigators on it. We're doing a deep dive into her past. Everything prior to three years ago when she moved to Los Angeles is strangely murky. We’ll find out why."

Meanwhile, Martha was resting in the sunroom, sipping herbal tea under the watchful eye of a newly hired private nurse. Julian walked in, forcing a gentle smile onto his face.

"How are you feeling today?" he asked, taking the seat next to her.

"Silly, mostly," Martha sighed, shaking her head. "I never liked her, Julian. But I didn't want to ruin your happiness. I thought I was just being a jealous old woman."

"You were right all along," Julian said, squeezing her hand. "I was blind. But she underestimated both of us. And she's going to pay for every ounce of fear she put you through."

Chapter 3: Digging Up the Past

Three days later, the private investigator’s file landed on Julian’s desk with a heavy thud. The dossier was thick, filled with background checks, sealed court documents, and financial records.

"Her real name isn't Bianca Laurent," Marcus explained, leaning against the doorway of the study. "It's Beatrice Vance. She changed it legally five years ago after a rather messy incident in Chicago."

Julian opened the file. The pages revealed a terrifying pattern. Bianca—Beatrice—was a professional grifter. Julian was merely her biggest target yet. She had a history of attaching herself to wealthy, older men or men with vulnerable dependents.

"Look at the third tab," Marcus instructed.

Julian flipped the page and his blood ran cold. It was an obituary. Richard Sterling Sr., beloved father and philanthropist, dead at 81 after a tragic fall down the stairs. The fiancee listed in the surviving section was none other than Bianca, operating under the name 'Brianna.'

"She inherited a small fortune from his estate because he changed his will just weeks prior," Marcus said grimly. "The family suspected foul play but couldn't prove it. The old man's memory had supposedly been 'failing' him. Sound familiar?"

Julian slammed the folder shut. "She used the exact same playbook on my mother. Claim she's losing her mind, arrange an 'accident,' and take the inheritance."

"The Chicago police have reopened the Sterling file based on our tip," Marcus noted. "But Bianca isn't going down quietly. She just gave an exclusive interview to The West Coast Insider. She's claiming you're dangerously abusive."

Julian's jaw tightened. "Let her talk. Give her enough rope, and she'll hang herself."
