Chapter 5 - The Betrayal WithinThe tension inside the underground security bunker of the Moretti estate was thick enough to cut with a switchblade.

Computer monitors glowed with cascading lines of code, financial ledgers, and federal warrant filings. Rico stood before the central screen, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were stark white.
"Marcus," Dante growled, pacing the length of the room. "Elena’s own brother. The man we trusted with the eastern distribution network."
"He blames me for Elena's death," Rico said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying the frozen deadliness of an avalanche. "He thinks my lifestyle brought the shooters to that highway. He’s been bleeding my accounts and feeding data to the federal task force for four months, trying to hand me to the feds on a silver platter."
Clara stood near the doorway, hugging her arms. "If the federal task force has those warrants, they'll be coming for you next. Not just your warehouses. They'll freeze your assets, seize your properties, and..."
She stopped, looking at Leo, who was playing quietly with a wooden truck in the corner under Alva’s watchful eye.
"...and they'll take your son."
Rico turned to her. The cold, untouchable mafia boss was gone. Standing in his place was a father facing the ultimate nightmare.
"They won't take him," Rico said.
"How do you plan to stop them?" Clara challenged, stepping forward. "You're fighting a two-front war, Mr. Moretti. You have Marcone's crews threatening your docks in Brooklyn, and now federal indictments backed by your own brother-in-law's inside information. You can't shoot your way out of a federal indictment."
"I don't intend to shoot," Rico said, walking over to his desk and unlocking a heavy steel safe. He pulled out a thick manila folder filled with certified bank records, encrypted flash drives, and physical contracts. "Marcus made a fatal mistake. In his rush to frame me, he routed his shell company transactions through a Swiss subsidiary tied directly to our family trust—a trust protected by pre-nuptial agreements Elena signed before we married."
He slammed the folder onto the metal table.
"This proves Marcus embezzled three million dollars from the family estate to fund the federal informant network. The moment I hand this to the prosecutor leading the task force, Marcus’s credibility goes up in smoke, and the warrants become legally void."
"And who is going to hand it to the prosecutor?" Clara asked suspiciously. "If you walk into the federal building, you'll be arrested before you reach the front desk."
Rico looked at her. A heavy, pregnant silence fell over the bunker.
"You are," Rico said.
Clara stared at him as if he had grown a second head. "Me? Are you out of your absolute mind? I am a waitress! I have macroeconomics! I do not dabble in federal courier services for organized crime syndicates!"
"You're clean," Rico urged, stepping closer, his voice urgent and persuasive. "Your record is spotless. You have no connection to Moretti Holdings. If you walk into the federal district office downtown and hand this folder to Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance, claiming you found it dropped in a cab or received it anonymously as a whistle-blower... they have to look at it. They can't touch you."

"And if Marcus finds out I'm the one who handed him over?"
"Marcus won't find out," Rico promised, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding conviction. "Because by the time I'm done with him today, Marcus won't have the breath to look at anyone."
