Chapter 3 - The Recording They Thought Would Never ExistNobody moved.

The tiny digital recorder rested in David's palm like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Its red recording light blinked steadily.

One blink.

Another.

Another.

The only sound in the room came from the baby's soft breathing and the steady rhythm of Emma's heart monitor.

Across the suite, the two executives no longer looked untouchable.

The younger woman's fingers tightened around the armrest of her chair.

The older executive remained seated, but the confidence that had defined her since David arrived had begun to crack.

David looked at Emma.

"Have you listened to it?"

She shook her head.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid they would find it."

David gently squeezed her hand.

"You were brave."

For the first time since he entered the room, Emma managed a faint smile.

It lasted only a second.

Then she whispered,

"They almost found it."

"What happened?"

"The cleaning staff came in."

"They searched my bedside table."

"My suitcase."

"My flowers."

"They even looked inside the baby's diaper bag."

David frowned.

"They were searching for evidence."

Emma nodded.

"I hid the recorder inside my pillow."

The nurse standing beside the bed suddenly spoke.

"I remember."

Everyone turned toward her.

"They insisted on replacing her pillow yesterday."

Emma looked up.

"I refused."

The nurse nodded.

"You said it was more comfortable."

Emma swallowed.

"I lied."

The room fell silent again.

David slowly turned the recorder over in his hand.

Then he pressed PLAY.

Static.

A few seconds of quiet breathing.

The rustling of hospital sheets.

Then...

A woman's voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

The younger executive.

"You've wasted enough of everyone's time."

Emma's weak voice answered.

"I'm not signing."

Another voice.

The older executive.

"You misunderstand."

"This isn't a request."

Paper sliding across a table.

A pen clicking.

Emma whispered,

"My husband will never agree."

The older woman laughed softly.

"Your husband isn't here."

"And by the time he arrives..."

"...everything will already belong to us."

David's jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

Emma cried.

"Please..."

"Don't involve my baby."

The younger executive answered without emotion.

"Then sign."

"I won't."

A loud slap echoed through the hospital room.

The nurse covered her mouth.

David froze.

Emma lowered her eyes.

The recording captured her crying.

Then another sound.

Something heavy striking the floor.

Another slap.

Another.

David could hear Emma struggling to breathe.

Then the older executive spoke again.

"Perhaps pain will help you make better decisions."

The baby suddenly cried inside the recording.

A tiny newborn cry.

Weak.

Fragile.

Emma immediately began sobbing.

"Don't touch him!"

The younger woman laughed.

"No one has to."

"We only need Social Services to believe you're unstable."

David stared at the recorder.

His hands began shaking.

The recording continued.

"If you refuse..."

"You lose your company."

"You lose your child."

"You lose everything."

Emma screamed.

"No!"

Then...

A man's voice.

Not David.

Unknown.

Deep.

Professional.

"She's losing consciousness."

The older executive answered calmly.

"Good."

"Bring another consent form."

David stopped the recording.

Silence crashed over the room.

Even the snowfall outside seemed quieter.

Nobody spoke.

Finally...

David slowly looked toward the two executives.

Neither woman denied what everyone had just heard.

The younger executive stared at the floor.

The older one inhaled slowly before speaking.

"That recording proves nothing."

David almost laughed.

"It proves assault."

"It proves coercion."

"It proves conspiracy."

"It proves attempted fraud."

The older woman stood gracefully.

"You won't be able to use it."

"Why not?"

"Because the original hospital security footage no longer exists."

David frowned.

"What did you say?"

She smiled.

"The cameras malfunctioned."

"The nurses who witnessed the incident signed confidentiality agreements."

"The attending physician has already submitted his report."

She stepped closer.

"And none of it supports your version."

David realized what she meant.

They had prepared everything.

The paperwork.

The witnesses.

The reports.

Even the surveillance system.

Emma had never been meant to win.

The older executive adjusted her jacket.

"You still have your wife."

"You still have your son."

"Take them home."

"Forget today."

David stared at her.

Then...

His phone vibrated.

Once.

He glanced at the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

He answered without taking his eyes off the women.

"David Carter."

A calm voice spoke.

"Mr. Carter."

"My name is Daniel Ross."

"I'm a forensic document examiner."

David frowned.

"I didn't call you."

"I know."

"But someone else did."

"Who?"

There was a brief pause.

"The person who mailed me the original versions..."

"...of every document your wife refused to sign."

David's eyes widened.

"What original versions?"

"The ones hidden before they were altered."

The room became perfectly still.

Daniel continued.

"They arrived anonymously this morning."

"And Mr. Carter..."

Another pause.

"The signatures aren't the most interesting part."

David's heartbeat quickened.

"What is?"

The expert answered quietly.

"There are fingerprints."

"Blood."

"And one page..."

"...contains a handwritten confession."

Across the room...

May you like

For the first time that afternoon...

The older executive's face turned completely white.
