Chapter 4: The Corporate Fallout and the New Beginning

Inside the mansion, however, the world was quiet, warm, and smelled of freshly made pancakes.
Sophie sat at the massive dining room table, wearing a brand-new pink dress, her hair brushed into neat, shining curls. Across from her sat Richard, wearing a casual apron over his button-down shirt, proudly flipping pancakes on a portable electric griddle he had set up right there in the dining room just to make her smile.
"Is this enough syrup, Princess?" Richard asked, pouring a golden stream over her stack.
Sophie giggled—a bright, musical sound that Richard hadn't heard in over a year. "More! And a strawberry right on top!"
The doorbell chimed in the distance, breaking the peaceful morning atmosphere. Richard's jaw tightened instinctively, remembering all the intruders and fake professionals who had crossed that threshold in the past. He walked to the front door and opened it to find his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance, standing on the porch holding a stack of urgent legal files.
"Richard, the board is in an absolute uproar," Marcus said, stepping inside quickly. "They want you back in the office by Monday morning. The media is spinning wild conspiracy theories about Vanessa Cole's defense team claiming you neglected the child yourself to frame her."
Richard handed Marcus a thick manila folder he had prepared that morning, his expression entirely calm.
"Inside that folder are the medical reports, the police transcripts of Vanessa's confession, and the unedited security footage recovered from her hidden cameras," Richard said coldly. "Send it to every major news outlet. Then, tell the board of directors that if they ever call my phone about quarterly earnings while my daughter is eating breakfast, I will liquidate my entire equity stake, crash the company stock, and buy out every single one of them just to fire them personally."
Marcus stared at him for a long moment, then broke into a slow, respectful grin. "Got it. You're really stepping down from corporate life, aren't you?"
"I'm stepping up where it actually matters," Richard corrected, looking back toward the dining room where Sophie was happily licking syrup off her spoon. "The empire can wait. My daughter can't."

Over the next few months, the physical and emotional transformation of the household was profound. Richard hired professional interior designers to completely gut and remodel the kitchen into an open, warm, family-friendly space filled with light and laughter. The dark, soundproofed guest room upstairs was stripped down to the studs and rebuilt into a bright, colorful art studio filled with easels, finger paints, and bookshelves where Sophie could create without fear.
With the help of a compassionate pediatric therapist named Dr. Helen Carter, Sophie's nightmares gradually faded. She learned that she didn't have to hide her hunger, that her voice mattered, and most importantly, that her father loved her unconditionally, regardless of how many billions of dollars were in his bank accounts. Richard immersed himself completely in fatherhood, attending every school function, reading bedtime stories every single night, and building an unbreakable bond that could never be broken again.
