Chapter 9 - The Key Inside Elias MercerElias laughed.

Nobody else did.

His laughter stopped.

“You're serious.”

Lucia nodded.

“I don't understand.”

“Neither did Jonathan until you were born.”

“That makes no sense.”

“Your father was never supposed to carry the third key permanently.”

Elias folded his arms.

“So what exactly am I carrying?”

Lucia looked at Serena.

“Permission.”

Serena frowned.

“Permission for what?”

“To activate the Continuity Archive.”

Damiano's expression sharpened.

“The biometric covenant.”

Lucia looked at him.

“You know about it?”

“Rumors.”

“What is a biometric covenant?” Serena demanded.

Lucia sat.

“Alexander knew digital keys could be stolen. So the final authorization wasn't placed on a device. It was attached to a legal and biological verification structure.”

“That still tells me nothing.”

“The Mercer family became independent trustees of Laurent assets in 1994.”

“Why them?”

“Jonathan was Alexander's closest friend.”

Elias stared.

“My father never mentioned knowing Alexander.”

“He never mentioned many things.”

“No argument.”

Lucia continued.

“The third authorization requires a living Mercer trustee who meets specific succession conditions.”

Elias looked at her.

“And somehow that's me.”

“Yes.”

“What conditions?”

“Jonathan transferred trusteeship to you when he faked his death.”

Elias went still.

“So when he died…”

“Legally, you became the third key.”

Serena walked slowly toward the window.

Lucia's key.

Vittorio's key.

Elias's legal authority.

“Then our marriage wasn't needed to open the archive.”

“No.”

“Why arrange us to meet?”

Lucia looked at Elias.

“Because Alexander trusted Jonathan but didn't trust the people who might come after him. He wanted the Laurent heir and Mercer trustee to know each other personally before the archive could ever be accessed.”

Serena turned.

“You're saying my dead father created a system that encouraged our families to remain close.”

“Yes.”

“He didn't order me to marry Elias.”

“No.”

Elias exhaled.

“For once, our catastrophic decisions were our own.”

Serena almost smiled.

Almost.

“But Jonathan pushed us together.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lucia's expression became colder.

“Because he discovered something Alexander never intended.”

“What?”

“If the Laurent heir married the Mercer trustee, certain trust restrictions automatically collapsed.”

Elias stared.

“Meaning?”

Serena understood first.

“Jonathan could access more.”

Lucia nodded.

“Through marital estate structures, yes.”

Elias's face went pale.

“So my father weaponized Alexander's request.”

“He turned proximity into control.”

The humiliation on Elias's face was painful to watch.

He had spent years believing himself the architect of Mercer Group's expansion.

Now he was discovering his life had been shaped by his father's secret commitments.

Serena knew the feeling.

For one strange second, they were more alike divorced than they had been married.

Damiano moved toward Lucia.

“Where is Vittorio's key?”

“I don't know.”

“Emil took the ring.”

“Then Sebastian probably has it.”

“Sebastian is alive?”

Lucia gave him a sharp look.

“You thought he wasn't?”

“He disappeared fifteen years ago.”

“He went underground.”

“Working for Meridian?”

“One faction.”

Serena rubbed her forehead.

“Three factions. Claudia. Jonathan. Sebastian. Can someone please explain which person wants what without another family resurrection?”

Lucia almost smiled.

“Sebastian wants control of the archive. Claudia works with him.”

“Jonathan wants it public.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I wanted it buried.”

Damiano stared.

“Wanted?”

Lucia looked at Serena.

“Until now.”

“What changed?”

“You.”

Serena's eyes narrowed.

Lucia reached across the table.

Not touching.

Simply placing her hand near Serena's.

“I spent thirty years trying to preserve the child I left behind.”

Her voice weakened.

“But that child no longer exists.”

Serena said nothing.

“You built a life without us. You survived people lying to you. You walked away from a husband who failed to value you. And when Damiano arrived, you didn't run behind him.”

A tear moved down Lucia's cheek.

“You told him to stand.”

Serena remembered the pier.

“Vittorio always feared what would happen when you stopped needing protection.”

“Why?”

“Because then you would become capable of choosing.”

Serena looked away.

“Choosing what?”

“What happens to the archive.”

The door opened.

Alessia entered.

“Damiano.”

He turned.

“We have a problem.”

“How original,” Elias muttered.

Alessia placed a laptop on the table.

A video appeared.

Jonathan Mercer sat inside what looked like a library.

Alive.

Calm.

He looked directly at the camera.

“Serena.”

The message was prerecorded.

“If you are seeing this, Lucia has finally decided to stop pretending she is dead.”

Lucia's face hardened.

Jonathan continued.

“Do not believe her version of history without asking why she disappeared after Bellacorte rather than exposing Meridian when she had the opportunity.”

Lucia crossed her arms.

“Coward.”

The video continued.

“You have probably also learned that Elias is the Mercer trustee. Unfortunately, he is no longer sufficient.”

Elias leaned closer.

“What?”

“A legal challenge was filed this morning contesting my presumed death. Until my status is resolved, trusteeship reverts to suspension.”

Damiano cursed.

Jonathan almost seemed to anticipate it.

“Yes, Damiano. Sebastian learned faster than I hoped.”

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

“Claudia Voss has filed evidence proving I am alive. By doing so, she has legally frozen Elias's authority.”

Elias stared.

“So I'm not the third key.”

“Not at the moment,” Lucia said.

Jonathan's video continued.

“However, thirty-one years ago Alexander created an emergency provision.”

He paused.

“If the Mercer trustee becomes disputed, authority transfers temporarily to the spouse of the trustee, provided the marriage predates the dispute.”

Everyone turned toward Serena.

Her stomach dropped.

“No.”

Elias stared at her.

“We're divorced.”

Lucia whispered, “Three days ago.”

Jonathan's image smiled without humor.

“The emergency provision applies only to a current spouse.”

Serena exhaled in relief.

Then he continued.

“Which is why the timing of your divorce matters.”

Her relief vanished.

Jonathan leaned toward the camera.

“Claudia needed Serena unmarried before my survival became public.”

Elias's face changed.

“She pushed the divorce…”

“To remove Serena from the succession chain,” Damiano finished.

Exactly.

Serena stared at the screen.

All those arguments.

All Claudia's suggestions.

You deserve someone who fits the future you're building.

Serena doesn't understand your ambition.

You can't build the next version of Mercer Group while carrying a marriage from your old life.

The divorce had not merely separated Serena from Elias.

It had legally removed her from a trust mechanism.

Elias closed his eyes.

“She manipulated me into doing exactly what Sebastian needed.”

Lucia looked at him coldly.

“She found what was already weak and pressed.”

Serena appreciated that distinction.

Jonathan's message continued.

“If you want the third key restored, there are two options.”

Elias leaned closer.

“First, my death must be legally confirmed.”

He smiled faintly.

“I do not recommend waiting.”

Nobody laughed.

“Second, Elias Mercer must have a legally recognized spouse.”

Serena froze.

Jonathan continued.

“And because Alexander was sentimental, the emergency covenant recognizes only the spouse registered before the Laurent heir attempts access.”

Damiano looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Lucia understood.

Her face went pale.

“It means Elias has to be married before Serena opens the first key.”

Elias stared at Serena.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Don't.”

“I know what you're thinking.”

“I am thinking nothing.”

“You're thinking this is going to turn into some ridiculous reason we have to remarry.”

Damiano looked ready to throw him through the window.

Lucia's mouth twitched.

Serena folded her arms.

“If you say another word, I may solve the trustee problem by killing you myself.”

Elias nodded.

“Fair.”

Jonathan continued.

“Serena, I know you will hate the implication. So understand this: nobody is asking you to marry Elias again.”

Everyone relaxed slightly.

“There is another solution.”

The screen changed.

A courthouse record appeared.

Elias leaned forward.

“What is that?”

A marriage certificate.

Dated three days earlier.

The day of the divorce.

Serena read the names.

Elias Jonathan Mercer.

Claudia Elise Voss.

Serena went completely still.

Elias looked as though someone had struck him.

“No.”

Lucia stared at him.

“You married Claudia?”

“No.”

“It says you did.”

“I didn't.”

Alessia began checking.

“The document is registered with Charleston County.”

Elias stepped closer.

“That's impossible.”

Serena felt an old wound tear open.

Three days.

Had he married Claudia immediately?

Was everything even worse than she believed?

Elias looked at her.

“I swear to you.”

“Do not swear.”

“Serena, I did not marry her.”

Alessia zoomed in.

“The signature appears electronic.”

Elias stared.

“My digital certificate.”

Claudia had access.

She had been working with his legal team.

The truth emerged.

The divorce had removed Serena.

The fraudulent marriage had inserted Claudia.

Lucia whispered, “She made herself the emergency spouse.”

Damiano's voice became deadly calm.

“Meaning?”

Serena already knew.

“If Elias is the third key…”

She looked at the certificate.

“Then Claudia can now claim his authority.”

Jonathan's recording ended with one sentence.

“Serena, whatever you do, do not let Claudia obtain the first key.”

Everyone slowly turned toward Elias.

He touched his jacket.

Then froze.

The capsule was gone.

He searched one pocket.

Then another.

His face drained.

“I had it when I entered the building.”

Alessia immediately opened security footage.

They reviewed the lobby.

Elevator.

Hallway.

Then saw it.

As Elias stepped out of the elevator earlier, an assistant had brushed against him.

A woman wearing Mercer Group identification.

Elias whispered, “I don't know her.”

Alessia enlarged the image.

The woman looked directly at the camera.

Blonde hair.

Different makeup.

But unmistakable.

May you like

Claudia.

The first key was already gone.
