Chapter 3 - THURSDAY NIGHTSFor the first hour, Vanessa was winning.

Not legally.

Emotionally.

And she knew the difference mattered.

Her attorney, Rebecca Sloan, presented her as a frightened pregnant woman trying to protect her family.

Vanessa testified that anonymous harassment had increased after she announced her pregnancy.

She described messages calling her a home-wrecker.

Messages claiming Ethan would leave her.

Messages saying the baby might not be his.

She dabbed her eyes carefully with a tissue.

“I tried to ignore it,” she said.

“But I’m pregnant. Stress isn’t healthy for my baby.”

Rebecca nodded sympathetically.

“And why do you believe Ms. Brooks was responsible?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because who else would hate me enough?”

There it was.

Not evidence.

Emotion.

But the room reacted.

I felt it.

The silent human temptation to accept a simple story.

Wife loses husband.

New woman gets pregnant.

Ex-wife becomes jealous.

Everyone understands that story.

Daniel wrote something on his legal pad.

I leaned toward him.

“She has nothing.”

“Correct.”

“Then why does this feel terrible?”

“Because she’s performing for the room.”

Vanessa continued.

She said friends had told her I was obsessed.

She said I had never accepted that Ethan chose her.

She said she feared I might escalate.

Then came the moment she had apparently been waiting for.

Rebecca asked, “Why do you think Ms. Brooks has struggled to move on?”

Vanessa sighed.

“I don’t know.”

She looked at me.

Then at the reporters.

And smiled.

“Maybe if she were a better woman, she could have kept her husband.”

Laughter broke out.

A few people gasped.

Even Rebecca looked startled.

Ethan lowered his head, smiling.

The judge immediately intervened.

“Ms. Carter.”

“My apologies, Your Honor.”

Daniel leaned toward me.

“Don’t react.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re crushing your pen.”

I loosened my hand.

Something inside me became very still.

Not numb.

Still.

There is a difference.

Numbness is helpless.

Stillness is what happens when the fear finally leaves.

Vanessa had just reminded me that this had never been about safety.

It had never been about harassment.

She wanted a stage.

She wanted to defeat me in public.

Fine.

She had one.

When Rebecca finished, Daniel stood.

“Your Honor, before cross-examination continues, we request permission to introduce evidence directly relevant to the plaintiff’s allegations and credibility.”

Rebecca rose immediately.

“Your Honor, we object to any attempt to turn this proceeding into character assassination.”

Daniel didn’t look at her.

“The plaintiff has alleged that my client fabricated and spread claims regarding Ms. Carter’s romantic fidelity and pregnancy.”

“Ms. Carter has placed those claims at the center of her request for relief.”

The judge looked toward Rebecca.

“What evidence?”

Daniel picked up the folder.

“Authenticated hotel records, corroborating photographs, communications, and travel documentation.”

Vanessa stopped smiling.

It was subtle.

If I hadn’t spent the previous year studying every photograph she posted, I might have missed it.

Her shoulders stiffened.

Ethan looked at her.

She didn’t look back.

The judge allowed Daniel to proceed conditionally, subject to objections as specific exhibits were offered.

Daniel walked toward the witness stand.

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Ms. Carter, you testified that Ms. Brooks spread false rumors claiming you had been unfaithful to Mr. Brooks.”

“Yes.”

“And you called those rumors vicious lies.”

“Yes.”

“You are currently in an exclusive relationship with Ethan Brooks?”

“Yes.”

“You have represented publicly that the two of you became committed to one another shortly after Mr. Brooks separated from his wife?”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Yes.”

“Do you know Ryan Mitchell?”

Silence.

Not long.

Maybe two seconds.

But two seconds in a courtroom can become a confession.

Vanessa shifted in her chair.

“I know many people.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Rebecca stood.

“Argumentative.”

“Sustained. Rephrase.”

Daniel nodded.

“Have you met Ryan Mitchell?”

“Yes.”

“In what context?”

“Socially. Charity events.”

“Only charity events?”

Vanessa looked at Rebecca.

Then back at Daniel.

“As far as I remember.”

Daniel returned to the table.

He picked up a photograph.

Rebecca objected.

Daniel authenticated the foundation through records already submitted and the investigator’s supporting declaration.

The judge examined it.

Then Daniel placed the photograph on the courtroom monitor.

Vanessa and Ryan.

Four Seasons lobby.

His hand at her waist.

The room went quiet.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Vanessa’s face lost color.

Daniel looked at her.

“Is that you?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And is that Ryan Mitchell?”

“Yes.”

“Was this photograph taken at a charity event?”

“No.”

“Where was it taken?”

“I don’t remember.”

Daniel changed the image.

A receipt appeared.

Hotel.

Thursday.

Another Thursday.

Another.

Another.

Seven dates.

“Do these dates help your memory?”

Rebecca stood.

“We object to the insinuation.”

Daniel turned.

“I haven’t insinuated anything.”

The judge looked at Vanessa.

“Answer the question.”

Vanessa’s voice became smaller.

“I met Ryan at the hotel a few times.”

“A few?”

“I don’t remember exactly.”

Daniel pointed toward the screen.

“Seven?”

“I suppose.”

“Were those meetings romantic?”

“No.”

The next photograph appeared.

Ryan kissing Vanessa.

Someone behind me inhaled loudly.

Ethan’s head turned toward Vanessa so quickly I heard the movement of his jacket.

“What the hell?”

The judge struck her gavel.

“Mr. Brooks.”

Vanessa whispered, “Ethan—”

“Ms. Carter, address counsel.”

Daniel waited until the room settled.

“Was that kiss platonic?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

This time I couldn’t tell whether the tears were real.

“It was a mistake.”

“One mistake?”

She didn’t answer.

“Ms. Carter?”

“It happened a few times.”

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

His face looked empty.

I knew that emptiness.

I had worn it in my kitchen.

For one painful second, I wanted to look away.

Then I remembered him smirking ten minutes earlier.

Daniel continued.

“These meetings occurred while you were in a relationship with Ethan Brooks?”

“Yes.”

“And several occurred after you announced your pregnancy?”

Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”

The courtroom no longer felt amused.

The cruelty had drained out of the spectacle.

Now people understood they were watching something real.

Something ugly.

Something that could not be repaired with captions.

Daniel let the silence remain for several seconds.

Then he said, “Now I’d like to ask you about Thursdays.”

Vanessa’s fingers tightened over her stomach.

I saw it.

Daniel saw it too.

“During this period, what did Mr. Brooks believe you were doing on Thursday evenings?”

Rebecca stood.

“Relevance.”

Daniel answered before the judge could ask.

“Ms. Carter alleges my client manufactured defamatory claims.”

“Evidence that Ms. Carter herself created false explanations surrounding the exact conduct at issue goes directly to credibility and falsity.”

The judge nodded.

“Overruled.”

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

He was staring at her.

“What did he believe?” Daniel asked again.

“I taught yoga.”

“Prenatal yoga?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“Sometimes.”

“On the seven Thursdays reflected in those hotel records?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Ms. Carter?”

“No.”

A low murmur traveled through the room.

The judge silenced it.

Daniel changed direction.

“Do you know Derek Collins?”

That was the moment Vanessa truly broke.

Not loudly.

Her entire body simply changed.

Her lips parted.

Her eyes widened.

She looked toward Rebecca with naked panic.

And Ethan saw it.

“What is this?” he whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Daniel repeated the question.

“Do you know Derek Collins?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He was my trainer.”

“Only your trainer?”

“Yes.”

Daniel returned to the table.

He placed several photographs beside the monitor controls.

Vanessa started crying before he displayed one.

“Please.”

The word was barely audible.

Daniel stopped.

The courtroom became so quiet I could hear the air-conditioning.

“Please what, Ms. Carter?”

She closed her eyes.

I felt no triumph.

None.

Only dread.

Daniel displayed a still image from the Miami pool video.

Vanessa and Derek walking hand in hand.

Another image.

Vanessa leaning against him near a hotel bar.

Another.

A travel itinerary.

Daniel asked, “Did you travel to Miami with Mr. Collins?”

“Yes.”

“Did Ethan Brooks accompany you?”

“No.”

“Did you share accommodations with Mr. Collins?”

Rebecca objected.

The judge overruled.

Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”

Ethan stood.

“Vanessa.”

The judge’s voice hardened.

“Mr. Brooks, sit down or leave.”

He sat.

But he looked nothing like the man who had entered court that morning.

His face was gray.

His hands trembled.

Daniel’s next question was quieter.

“Were you romantically involved with Derek Collins?”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Rebecca leaned toward her, whispering.

Finally Vanessa said, “For a short time.”

I looked down at my hands.

It should have felt like justice.

Instead, all I could think about was my kitchen.

How quickly a life can divide into before and after.

Daniel returned to the table.

I knew what came next.

The message.

The sentence.

The dates.

I touched his sleeve when he passed me.

He stopped.

I whispered, “Only what we need.”

He studied my face.

Then nodded once.

He returned to Vanessa.

“Ms. Carter, did Mr. Collins ever communicate concerns to you about the timeline of your pregnancy?”

Rebecca stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.

“Your Honor—”

The judge raised a hand.

“Counsel, approach.”

Both attorneys moved forward.

They spoke quietly.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only fragments.

Allegation.

Central claim.

Authentication.

Prejudice.

Credibility.

After several minutes, they returned.

The judge addressed Daniel.

“You may ask within a limited scope.”

Daniel nodded.

He faced Vanessa.

“Did Derek Collins send you a message asking whether Ethan knew that, quote, ‘the dates don’t add up’?”

Vanessa stared at him.

Ethan went completely still.

Daniel waited.

“Ms. Carter?”

“Yes.”

The word was almost soundless.

My stomach twisted.

“And did you respond, ‘Stop. Not in text’?”

Vanessa began to sob.

“Yes.”

Ethan’s chair scraped backward.

“No.”

Vanessa turned to him.

“Ethan, listen—”

“No.”

The judge struck her gavel again.

“Mr. Brooks.”

But Ethan wasn’t listening to anyone.

“What dates?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Please.”

“What dates?”

His voice cracked.

That was worse than shouting.

Daniel looked toward the judge.

The judge looked exhausted already.

“Mr. Brooks, you will control yourself.”

Ethan sat slowly.

His eyes never left Vanessa.

Daniel did not mention the shaded calendar yet.

He didn’t need to.

The room understood enough.

But the lawsuit still required one more thing.

Vanessa had accused me of inventing rumors.

May you like

Daniel needed to show that I hadn’t.

And Vanessa, in her desperation, was about to help him do it.
