Chapter 8 - Claire Refused to Be Roman's WeaknessAdrian's message contained photographs.

Not threatening photographs.
That made them worse.
Elena entering a charity board meeting.
Claire opening The Quiet Page.
Roman standing outside his father's estate.
Ordinary moments.
Proof of surveillance.
Then came the demand.
Roman would meet Adrian at midnight inside an unfinished De Luca development near the river.
No police.
No security.
No recording devices.
In exchange, Adrian claimed he would surrender the original financial archive proving which records had been altered.
Roman immediately agreed.
Claire immediately disagreed.
They stood in the back room of The Quiet Page arguing in voices low enough that customers could not hear.
"He's expecting you alone because he knows you will come."
"Exactly."
"That isn't an argument."
"It means he wants me, not you or Elena."
Claire stared at him.
"You're doing it again."
Roman stopped.
"What?"
"Turning yourself into the only person allowed to carry risk."
"This is my responsibility."
"No. Adrian chose to threaten Elena. He chose to involve me. He chose to manipulate Vanessa. Those decisions belong to him."
Roman ran a hand across his face.
"I am not taking you to meet a dangerous man."
"I didn't ask you to."
Claire leaned against the desk.
"I'm asking you not to walk into his trap pretending sacrifice is the same thing as responsibility."
Roman looked at her.
"Then what do you suggest?"
"We use what he expects."
That evening, they built a plan.
Not Roman's plan.
Not Claire's.
Not Elena's.
A shared one.
Police would remain outside Adrian's expected surveillance perimeter.
Roman would enter alone, as demanded.
He would not wear a wire.
Adrian would likely check.
Instead, the unfinished building's existing construction security system would be restored remotely.
Cameras Adrian believed inactive would record everything.
Gabriel Vale supplied financial documents establishing Adrian's long-term fraud.
Vanessa provided messages connecting him to the surveillance contractor.
Elena insisted on remaining at the command location.
Roman objected.
Then stopped.
"What do you need?"
"A headset."
Claire smiled.
Progress.
At eleven fifty-eight, Roman entered the building.
The concrete structure rose twenty floors above the river.
No windows had been installed on the upper levels.
Wind moved through open walls.
Adrian waited on the twelfth floor.
Roman had not seen him since the leak.
Adrian looked almost unchanged.
Expensive coat.
Perfect posture.
The face of a man who had sat across boardroom tables from Roman for nine years.
"You're late."
Roman checked his watch.
"By forty seconds."
"Your father would have called that disrespect."
"My father is dead."
Adrian smiled.
"Not really."
Roman remained silent.
Adrian opened a laptop.
"You destroyed everything he built."
"I dismantled criminal operations."
"You dismantled power."
"Same thing to men like you."
Adrian's smile disappeared.
There it was.
The wound beneath everything.
He had believed Vittorio's empire represented order.
Roman represented betrayal.
"You could have owned this city."
"I own enough."
"You became weak."
Roman thought of Claire.
Elena.
The question.
What do you want?
"No."
Roman stepped closer.
"I became accountable."
Adrian laughed.
"Is that what the waitress calls it?"
Roman's expression changed.
Adrian noticed.
"Claire Dawson."
He walked toward the unfinished edge of the floor.
"Ordinary family. Ordinary education. Ordinary little shop."
Roman remained still.
"Careful."
Adrian smiled.
"That's the Roman I remember."
Claire watched from a monitor three blocks away.
Elena sat beside her wearing headphones.
She couldn't see the screen.
Claire quietly described what was happening.
"Adrian is near the western edge. Roman is about twelve feet away."
Elena listened.
"He wants Roman angry."
"Yes."
"Roman knows."
Claire hoped so.
Back inside the building, Adrian produced a phone.
On the screen was a live video.
The Quiet Page.
Claire's stomach dropped.
Someone stood outside the rear entrance.
Roman saw the image.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing yet."
Adrian smiled.
"I wanted you to understand the equation."
Roman's voice became quiet.
"If anyone touches her—"
"There."
Adrian pointed.
"That."
Roman stopped.
"That is your father."
"No."
"The threat. The certainty. The belief that because you love someone, everyone else must fear what happens if they're harmed."
Roman stared at him.
Adrian stepped closer.
"You spent nine years pretending you were different."
He held out the phone.
"Prove me right."
"What do you want?"
"Hit me."
Roman almost laughed.
"What?"
"Just once."
Adrian opened his arms.
"Show everyone what you really are."
Roman finally understood.
The meeting was being recorded.
Not by police.
By Adrian.
He wanted footage.
Roman De Luca attacking an unarmed former executive.
The perfect ending.
Adrian moved closer.
"You know what your father would do?"
"Yes."
"He'd break my jaw."
"Probably."
"And you?"
Roman looked at him.
"I think I'll let the police disappoint you."
Adrian's expression changed.
He looked toward the ceiling.
Then at Roman.
"You brought them."
"No."
Technically true.
Claire had.
Adrian suddenly struck Roman.
Hard.
Roman staggered backward.
At the command center, Claire stood.
"Don't."
Elena understood.
"He's hitting Roman?"
"Yes."
Again.
Roman's lip split.
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"Fight."
Roman pushed him away.
Not a punch.
Just distance.
Adrian swung again.
Roman blocked it.
"Fight me!"
"No."
Adrian's composure shattered.
For nine years, he had waited to prove Roman was Vittorio.
Roman's refusal was unbearable.
Adrian pulled a gun.
Everything changed.
Claire grabbed the radio.
"Now."
Police moved.
Inside, Roman stared at the weapon.
Adrian's hand shook.
"You ruined everything."
"No."
Roman wiped blood from his mouth.
"You spent nine years ruining your own life because you couldn't accept that the future changed without your permission."
Adrian aimed at him.
Then another voice came from behind.
"Drop it."
Gabriel Vale.
Roman stared.
"What are you doing here?"
Gabriel held no weapon.
Which seemed either brave or stupid.
"Apparently making poor decisions."
Adrian turned the gun toward him.
That distraction was enough.
Roman moved.
He struck Adrian's wrist.
The gun fell.
Both men crashed against a concrete column.
Police stormed the floor seconds later.
Adrian was arrested.
No execution.
No disappearance.
No private revenge.
Handcuffs.
Evidence.
Charges.
It was almost disappointingly lawful.
Claire had never been more relieved.
Roman emerged from the building twenty minutes later with a bruised face.
Claire ran toward him.
Then stopped.
He saw why.
She was waiting.
Roman opened his arms.
Claire crossed the distance.
He held her tightly.
Elena approached with her cane.
"Is he ugly now?"
Claire looked at Roman's swollen lip.
"More than usual."
"Excellent."
Roman laughed and immediately regretted it.
Gabriel walked past them toward investigators.
Roman called his name.
Gabriel stopped.
"Why did you come?"
Gabriel considered the question.
"Your father took eight years from me."
He looked toward Adrian.
"I decided not to give him another one."
Then he left.
The evidence Adrian carried proved extensive fraud.
It also demonstrated that many of the most damaging records released against Roman had been altered.
Not all.
Some authentic documents still required explanation.
Roman did not celebrate.
He cooperated.
Forensic accountants continued their work.
Regulators continued theirs.
Consequences would not disappear merely because Adrian was guilty too.
Claire respected Roman more for understanding that.
At three in the morning, they returned to The Quiet Page.
The shop was intact.
The person seen outside had been another contractor hired to frighten Roman.
He had been arrested without entering.
Roman sat at Elena's window table.
Claire placed ice against his mouth.
"Ow."
"You survived a gun."
"Your medical care may finish me."
Elena drank tea.
"Try being less dramatic."
Roman looked at Claire.
"You were never my weakness."
Claire's hand stopped.
"What?"
"Adrian thought you were."
Roman touched the ice pack.
"He was wrong."
Claire sat opposite him.
"What am I?"
Roman looked at her for a long moment.
"A person I love."
Silence.
Elena slowly put down her tea.
Claire forgot how to breathe.
Roman continued before she could answer.
"That wasn't a request."
Claire blinked.
"What?"
"I'm not saying it because I expect anything."
His voice softened.
"I just don't want fear deciding what I say anymore."
Claire stared at the man who had once arrived with ten black SUVs because power was the only language he trusted.
Now he sat bruised inside her bookshop asking for nothing.
Claire reached across the table.
She took his hand.
"I love you too."
Roman became completely still.
Elena sighed.
"Finally."
Claire laughed.
Roman looked toward his sister.
"Could we have one private moment?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I've suffered through months of this."
Claire leaned across the table and kissed Roman anyway.
Elena covered her ears dramatically.
Outside, dawn slowly reached the city.
Adrian Mercer was in custody.
The immediate threat was over.
But by morning, another question remained.
What happened when Roman De Luca no longer had an enemy to fight?
May you like
Could he build a life without needing danger to define his purpose?
Claire was about to find out.
