Chapter 7 - Angela’s Last LetterThey found the package in the estate mailroom at 4:17 in the morning.

It had arrived two days earlier.
Security had scanned it for explosives and chemicals before placing it among dozens of ordinary deliveries awaiting review.
The label read:
DAISY HUTCHKINS
CARE OF DOMINIC CALABRA
4200 OAKVILLE LANE
OAK BROOK, ILLINOIS
Daisy stared at her mother’s handwriting.
She knew it.
Not consciously.
Not until she saw it again.
But suddenly she remembered birthday cards from when she was five.
A grocery list stuck to a refrigerator.
Her mother teaching her to spell her surname.
H-U-T-C-H-K-I-N-S.
Daisy touched the cardboard.
Dominic stood beside her.
“You don’t have to open it tonight.”
“Yes, I do.”
They carried it into the study.
Only Daisy, Dominic, Eli, Vincent, and Salvatore were allowed inside.
Daisy cut through the tape.
Inside was a wooden box.
A letter rested on top.
DAISY.
Her hands shook.
She unfolded it.
My sweet girl,
If you are reading this, then either I finally found the courage to tell you everything, or someone reached me before I could.
Daisy’s eyes blurred.
Dominic placed his hand over hers.
She continued.
There is no apology big enough for seventeen years.
I told myself every day that leaving you was protecting you. Some days I believed it. Other days I knew I was simply a frightened woman asking a little girl to pay the price for my mistakes.
Daisy stopped.
Her chest hurt.
Eli looked down.
She continued.
I watched you when I could. First through state records, later through people I trusted. When you turned eighteen and disappeared from the foster system, I lost you for almost four years.
Those were the worst years of my life.
Then I saw a photograph of you outside The Velvet Room.
Standing beside Dominic Calabra.
I nearly drove to Chicago that night.
Daisy looked at Dominic.
He said nothing.
But I saw the way Dominic looked at you.
I knew that look because Salvatore once looked at me that way.
Like the entire world could burn as long as one person survived.
And for the first time since I left you, I believed you were protected by someone more dangerous than the people hunting me.
Daisy laughed through tears.
“That sounds about right.”
Dominic squeezed her hand.
The letter continued.
Do not mistake protection for goodness.
Dominic comes from men who committed terrible things.
But a person is not obligated to become the worst thing in their blood.
Daisy looked at her husband.
His eyes remained fixed on the page.
The next paragraph changed everything.
The box contains the original Project Lazarus ledger.
Not copies.
Not fragments.
The original.
Inside are records proving that Giuseppe Calabra and Isabella Calabra founded Meridian with Senator Hawthorne and five other partners.
The ledger also contains evidence that can destroy every remaining branch.
But there is something else.
Something Dominic must see.
Daisy reached into the box.
Beneath several encrypted drives was another envelope.
DOMINIC.
He froze.
Daisy handed it to him.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital room.
A newborn.
A younger Isabella.
A much younger Salvatore.
And a baby in Angela’s arms.
Dominic turned the photograph over.
His face changed.
“What?”
Daisy asked.
He handed it to her.
On the back Angela had written:
Dominic Calabra, born October 9, 1991.
Biological father: Salvatore Calabra.
The room went silent.
Dominic did not move.
Salvatore’s face collapsed.
“No.”
Vincent whispered.
“Dom…”
Dominic looked at his uncle.
“You knew.”
Salvatore shook his head.
“You knew.”
“No.”
Dominic crossed the room and slammed him into the wall.
“You knew!”
“I swear to God—”
Dominic punched him.
Vincent tried to intervene.
Dominic shoved him away.
Daisy stepped forward.
“Dominic!”
He stopped.
Not because of Vincent.
Because of her.
She held the letter.
“Angela explains it.”
Dominic released Salvatore.
His breathing was violent.
Daisy read.
Dominic,
If you are reading this, I owe you truth too.
Isabella became pregnant during a period when Giuseppe was believed infertile following an injury. Salvatore was your biological father.
Giuseppe discovered the affair shortly after your birth.
But he raised you as his son because an heir was politically useful.
Salvatore was ordered never to reveal the truth.
I learned this when I worked for him.
Salvatore closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know she had proof.”
Dominic stared.
“You slept with my mother.”
“Once.”
“You let my father raise me.”
“I believed you were his.”
“You never questioned it?”
“Your mother told me the child wasn’t mine.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.”
Salvatore looked devastated.
“I would have come for you.”
“Would you?”
Dominic gestured toward Daisy.
“You watched her spend seventeen years without her mother.”
The accusation struck.
Salvatore had no response.
Daisy continued reading.
Giuseppe never forgave Isabella.
He controlled her through Dominic.
Isabella never forgave Salvatore for leaving.
She controlled Salvatore through me.
Every person in this family learned to use love as leverage.
Do not continue that tradition.
Daisy stopped.
Dominic walked toward the fireplace.
For once, he looked less like a mafia boss and more like a man who had just learned his entire childhood had been manufactured.
Daisy joined him.
“I don’t know who I am,” he whispered.
“Yes, you do.”
He laughed hollowly.
“My father isn’t my father.”
“The man who raised you shaped parts of your life.”
“He made me.”
“No.”
Daisy turned him toward her.
“He hurt you. He taught you things. He influenced you.”
She placed her palm over his heart.
“But he did not make this.”
Dominic looked at her.
“You did.”
His eyes closed.
“You chose to protect Maria.”
“You chose to protect Eli.”
“You chose to feed people under Lower Wacker.”
She smiled faintly.
“And you chose a homeless woman with terrible cooking skills to become your wife.”
“Your cooking is better now.”
Daisy laughed.
It was exactly the wrong moment.
Which made it perfect.
Dominic’s forehead touched hers.
Behind them, Vincent cleared his throat.
“I hate interrupting emotional breakthroughs.”
Dominic did not move.
“But we have a larger problem.”
He held up one of the drives from Angela’s box.
“This is not only old data.”
Dominic turned.
“What?”
Vincent connected it to an isolated laptop.
Financial transactions appeared.
Recent transactions.
September.
October.
November.
“This year,” Daisy whispered.
Vincent nodded.
“Meridian is still active.”
Salvatore approached.
“I told you.”
“Who runs it?” Dominic asked.
Salvatore looked grim.
“Isabella and Hawthorne.”
“What are they financing?”
Vincent opened another directory.
His expression changed.
“Political campaigns.”
Another.
“Private security firms.”
Another.
“Judges.”
Another.
“Police pension funds.”
Daisy stared at the screen.
“This isn’t an organization.”
“No,” Salvatore said.
“It’s an ecosystem.”
Then Eli noticed a folder.
DAISY CALABRA.
Everyone froze.
Dominic clicked it.
Photographs appeared.
Daisy leaving the estate.
Daisy at charity events.
Daisy visiting a housing shelter.
Daisy sleeping beside Dominic.
The final image had been taken inside their bedroom.
Dominic became utterly still.
Someone had been inside.
Vincent whispered.
“Jesus.”
A document followed.
SUBJECT: D. CALABRA.
LEVERAGE RATING: CRITICAL.
RECOMMENDATION: PREGNANCY EVENT.
Daisy frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Dominic looked toward her.
Then down.
His eyes moved to her stomach.
Daisy instinctively did the same.
Maria had been teasing her for weeks about being tired.
She had missed her period.
She had blamed stress.
No.
Daisy’s face drained.
Dominic understood instantly.
“Daisy?”
She looked at him.
“I might be pregnant.”
Every person in the room went silent.
Dominic’s reaction was almost imperceptible.
Shock.
Then wonder.
Then terror.
He took her hand.
“We’ll test.”
Daisy nodded.
But Vincent was still reading.
His expression had become horrific.
“Dom.”
“What?”
“This file isn’t discussing a hypothetical pregnancy.”
Dominic looked at him.
Vincent swallowed.
“It says confirmed.”
Daisy went cold.
“That’s impossible.”
Then she remembered.
Two weeks earlier.
A routine blood test after a dizzy spell.
The estate physician.
The same physician who had kidnapped Eli.
Dominic’s face transformed.
“They knew before we did.”
Salvatore looked at the surveillance photographs.
“And now Isabella knows she may have another Calabra heir.”
Dominic immediately wrapped Daisy in his arms.
His voice became lethal.
“No one touches my wife.”
Daisy looked at the file.
A final line waited beneath the pregnancy report.
OPERATION EVE AUTHORIZED.
EXECUTION WINDOW: 72 HOURS.
Daisy whispered.
“What is Operation Eve?”
Salvatore’s face went white.
For the first time since entering the estate, he looked truly frightened.
“It means they aren’t coming for Dominic.”
May you like
His eyes moved toward Daisy.
“They’re coming for you and the baby.”
