Chapter 7 - The Rule Claire BrokeFor six days, nothing happened.

That was worse.

Dominic’s security team tracked Vincent Caruso through a collection of shell companies, rented apartments, and intermediaries.

They knew he had entered the United States through Miami.

They knew he had stayed in New York for eleven days.

They knew he had met twice with Anthony Russo’s former attorney before Anthony’s indictment.

They did not know where he was now.

Claire tried to keep living normally.

She taught.

She graded papers.

She argued with Dominic about whether two security agents really needed to sit inside a sedan outside her apartment.

He claimed there were only two because she had rejected four.

She reminded him that compromise did not mean starting with an unreasonable number so the reduced version sounded sensible.

Dominic looked genuinely impressed.

“You’ve been reading negotiation books.”

“No. I teach nine-year-olds.”

“Similar environment.”

On Thursday, Claire’s class was building model bridges from popsicle sticks when Mrs. Alvarez appeared at the classroom door.

“Claire?”

Something in the principal’s face made her stomach tighten.

She stepped into the hallway.

“What happened?”

“There’s a woman in the office asking for you.”

“Who?”

“She says her name is Elena Caruso.”

Claire stopped.

“Caruso?”

Mrs. Alvarez nodded.

“She says she’s Vincent Caruso’s daughter.”

Every security rule Dominic had explained entered Claire’s mind at once.

Do not meet unknown contacts.

Do not respond to messages from Caruso.

Do not allow anyone to isolate you.

Call Ethan.

Call Dominic.

Wait.

Claire did exactly three of those things.

She texted Ethan.

Woman named Elena Caruso at school. Claims she’s Vincent’s daughter.

Then she walked toward the office.

She did not call Dominic.

That was the rule she broke.

Elena Caruso was twenty-nine.

Claire had expected someone polished and intimidating.

Instead, she found a thin woman in jeans and a gray coat sitting beside the receptionist with both hands wrapped around a paper cup.

She looked exhausted.

When Claire entered, Elena stood quickly.

“Ms. Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Claire stopped.

That was not what she expected.

Elena looked toward Mrs. Alvarez.

“Can we speak somewhere private?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Elena swallowed.

“All right.”

“You have five minutes.”

“My father is going to hurt Dominic.”

Claire felt the room change.

“How?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“That isn’t useful.”

Elena’s face tightened.

“I know.”

Claire studied her.

“Why come to me?”

“Because Dominic won’t trust me.”

“He shouldn’t.”

“No.”

Claire had expected argument.

Elena did not give one.

“My father raised me to believe the Russo family owed us everything. Position. Money. Respect.”

“Why?”

“Because he thinks Dominic stole his future.”

Claire folded her arms.

“And what do you think?”

“I think my father destroyed his own life and spent seven years blaming the person who stopped helping him destroy other people’s.”

Claire stared.

Elena looked down at the cup.

“I didn’t always think that.”

“What changed?”

“My brother.”

Claire waited.

“He died three years ago.”

Claire’s expression softened despite herself.

Elena continued.

“Overdose.”

“I’m sorry.”

“My father blamed everyone. Doctors. Friends. Me. Dominic.”

“Dominic?”

“My brother worked for one of our family companies before Dominic shut it down. My father said if Dominic hadn’t destroyed our business, Marco would have had direction.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Marco had money. He had direction. He had a father who taught him that consequences were things weak people worried about.”

Claire heard footsteps.

Ethan entered the office.

He looked at Claire.

Then Elena.

His posture became completely still.

“Elena.”

She smiled sadly.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Claire looked between them.

“You know each other?”

“Yes,” Ethan said.

“No,” Elena said at the same time.

Claire stared.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“We’ve met.”

Elena looked at him.

“That’s one description.”

Claire immediately understood there was history.

“Not important right now.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You contacted Dominic?”

Claire hesitated.

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Claire.”

“I contacted you.”

“That was not the protocol.”

“You sound like him.”

“That should terrify both of us.”

Elena almost smiled.

Ethan did not.

“What does Vincent want?” he asked.

“I don’t know exactly.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because he’s collecting information.”

“On what?”

“Dominic’s legitimate companies. The cooperation agreements. Anthony’s case.”

Ethan’s face sharpened.

“Why?”

“He wants to prove Dominic is still involved in criminal activity.”

Claire frowned.

“But if Dominic isn’t?”

“He doesn’t need truth. He needs evidence that looks convincing enough.”

Ethan became very still.

“What kind of evidence?”

“Financial transfers. Recorded conversations. Documents.”

“Forged?”

“Some.”

Claire felt cold.

Elena looked at her.

“He believes the worst thing he can do is not kill Dominic.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Elena.”

“He wants to destroy the thing Dominic cares about most.”

Claire waited.

“The proof that he changed.”

Silence filled the office.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

This time Claire did not stop him.

Dominic arrived twenty-three minutes later.

He walked into the principal’s conference room wearing no coat despite the cold.

Two men followed.

He ignored them.

His eyes went directly to Claire.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

“Did she touch you?”

Elena looked offended.

Claire held up a hand.

“No. Sit down.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Sit.”

He sat.

Ethan turned away, visibly hiding amusement.

Claire took the chair beside Dominic.

Only then did he look at Elena.

His face emptied.

“Elena.”

“Dominic.”

“When did you get back?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Does your father know you’re here?”

“No.”

“You’re lying.”

Elena flinched.

Claire watched.

Dominic’s gaze sharpened.

“You always rub your thumb when you lie.”

Elena looked at her hand.

She stopped.

“He knows I’m in Philadelphia.”

“Does he know why?”

“No.”

“Better.”

Elena looked at Claire.

“He does that.”

“What?”

“Turns conversation into interrogation.”

Claire nodded.

“I’m familiar.”

Dominic glanced at her.

“Not now.”

“You’re not in charge of when I make observations.”

Elena stared.

Then, unexpectedly, she laughed.

Dominic looked offended.

That laugh broke something in the room.

For the next hour, Elena told them everything.

Vincent had spent years building a network around former Russo businesses.

He had waited.

When Anthony’s scandal became public, Vincent saw an opening.

He believed Dominic’s cooperation with authorities had made him weak inside his own family.

Several older associates agreed.

The plan was not to restart the old organization.

It was to prove Dominic’s reforms were fraudulent.

If investigators believed Dominic had secretly continued illegal operations while publicly claiming reform, his businesses could collapse.

Contracts.

Licenses.

Loans.

Employees.

Everything.

Claire understood.

“This isn’t revenge against Dominic’s money.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“It’s revenge against his identity.”

“Yes.”

Dominic leaned back.

“Where is your father?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“He changes locations.”

“How do you contact him?”

“He contacts me.”

“Phone?”

“Burners.”

“Next scheduled contact?”

Elena hesitated.

Dominic noticed.

“Tomorrow.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“What time?”

“Ten.”

“Where?”

“He gives me a location thirty minutes before.”

Dominic looked at Ethan.

“No.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

Ethan understood.

“You think it’s bait.”

“It could be.”

Elena shook her head.

“He trusts me.”

Dominic looked at her.

“No, he uses you.”

“That’s not—”

“It is.”

Elena’s face hardened.

“You don’t know my father.”

Dominic’s voice remained calm.

“I knew him before you were old enough to understand what he was.”

“Then you know he loves me.”

Dominic stared at her.

“Those things can both be true.”

Claire felt the sentence deeply.

Love did not automatically make a person safe.

She knew that better than most.

Dominic stood.

“You’re coming with us.”

Elena immediately backed away.

“No.”

“To a secure location.”

“No.”

“Your father may already know you spoke to Claire.”

“You don’t get to lock me somewhere.”

Dominic stopped.

Claire looked at him.

This was the moment.

The instinct.

Protection becoming control.

Dominic’s jaw worked.

Then he nodded.

“You’re right.”

Elena blinked.

Dominic reached into his jacket and placed a card on the table.

“This number reaches Ethan directly. If you want protection, call.”

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“No threats?”

“No.”

“No men following me?”

Dominic hesitated.

Claire cleared her throat.

“No men following you,” he said.

Elena looked suspicious.

“You’ve changed.”

Dominic’s eyes shifted to Claire.

“So I’m told.”

Elena left ten minutes later.

Dominic waited until she disappeared from the school grounds.

Then he turned toward Claire.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“Because I called Ethan.”

“That was not what I asked.”

Claire sighed.

“I knew what you would do.”

“You didn’t.”

“I knew what you would try to do.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?”

“You would come here immediately.”

“I did.”

“You would make security decisions.”

“Someone connected to a man threatening you appeared at your school.”

“Yes.”

“You should have called me.”

Claire folded her arms.

“You are my fiancé, not my commander.”

“I know that.”

“Then stop speaking like I violated an order.”

Dominic went silent.

Ethan looked toward the ceiling.

Mrs. Alvarez quietly left.

Claire stepped closer.

“I should have called you because you deserved to know, not because you have authority over me.”

Dominic absorbed that.

His shoulders lowered.

“All right.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was frightened.”

“I know.”

“You were sitting in a room with Vincent Caruso’s daughter.”

“And two office staff members, the principal, and security cameras.”

“That doesn’t make me less frightened.”

“It also doesn’t make fear an instruction.”

Dominic looked at her.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.”

Claire softened.

“I should have called.”

He blinked.

“You’re admitting that?”

“Don’t ruin it.”

“I apologize.”

“I knew you’d panic. So I avoided the conversation.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

Claire continued.

“That was me making your choice for you.”

A slow smile touched his mouth.

“We’re becoming disturbingly healthy.”

“Don’t get excited.”

That evening, Elena did not call.

At ten the next morning, Ethan waited with the secure phone.

Nothing.

Ten fifteen.

Nothing.

Ten thirty.

Nothing.

At eleven, Dominic stood beside the window of his Manhattan office.

“Find her.”

Ethan nodded.

This time Claire did not object.

By two o’clock, they found Elena’s car at a train station outside Philadelphia.

Driver’s door unlocked.

Phone inside.

No sign of Elena.

Security footage showed her arriving alone at 9:17 a.m.

At 9:23, a black SUV pulled beside her.

Elena got out of the car willingly.

She entered the SUV.

It drove away.

At 4:06 p.m., Dominic received a video.

Vincent Caruso sat in a dark room.

Elena sat beside him.

Not restrained.

Not visibly injured.

But terrified.

Vincent looked directly into the camera.

“Dominic.”

Claire stood beside Dominic as the recording continued.

“You took my work.”

“You took my name.”

“You took my son’s future.”

Vincent smiled.

“Now I will take the lie you built your life around.”

He placed a folder on the table.

Financial documents.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

“Tomorrow morning, every major newspaper and federal agency receives evidence proving Dominic Russo never left the family business.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Vincent leaned closer.

“You can stop me.”

A number appeared on a piece of paper.

“Transfer fifty million dollars to the account.”

Dominic’s face became unreadable.

Vincent continued.

“Not because I need the money.”

His hand rested on Elena’s shoulder.

She flinched.

Claire saw it.

Dominic did too.

“Because I want the transaction.”

Claire understood before Vincent said it.

“The moment you send money to an account connected to my network, you become exactly what I need you to be.”

Dominic whispered, “Compromised.”

On the screen, Vincent smiled.

“Welcome back to the family.”

The video ended.

Claire looked at Dominic.

His phone began ringing.

Outside counsel.

Federal contacts.

Ethan.

Executives.

Dominic ignored all of them.

He stared at the blank screen.

Then he said something Claire never expected.

May you like

“I don’t know what to do.”

And for the first time since she had known him, the most powerful man in every room looked genuinely helpless.
