Chapter 10 - Victor Was Offered Freedom If He Betrayed Khloe—Instead, He Made the One Deal Nobody ExpectedVictor Rossi was arrested at 11:43 p.m.

Khloe watched federal agents place him in handcuffs.

He did not resist.

That frightened her more than violence would have.

“Victor.”

He looked at her.

“Do not run.”

“What?”

“Do not disappear.”

Agents moved him toward the door.

“Victor!”

He stopped.

Khloe reached him.

“I’m getting you out.”

His expression softened.

“No.”

“What do you mean no?”

“Khloe.”

He leaned closer.

“You spent your life believing numbers should tell the truth.”

His voice dropped.

“Make them.”

Then they took him away.

Richard Hale was arrested six minutes later.

The media exploded before sunrise.

Former attorney general implicated in organized crime.

Victor Rossi arrested in federal racketeering investigation.

Weapons pipeline.

Corruption.

Murder.

Khloe became the unnamed accountant at the center of the largest criminal investigation Chicago had seen in decades.

She did not sleep.

For seventy-two hours, she worked.

Javier brought coffee.

Rosa brought food.

Luca, still recovering, sat beside her.

They reconstructed everything.

Not to erase Victor’s crimes.

Khloe refused.

That surprised everyone.

Javier finally asked.

“You can move money.”

“Yes.”

“Destroy files.”

“Yes.”

“Make things disappear.”

“Probably.”

“And you’re not.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Khloe looked at him.

“Because loving Victor does not mean pretending he didn’t do things.”

Javier considered that.

“He won’t like prison.”

“Nobody likes prison.”

“He’ll think you betrayed him.”

“No.”

Khloe returned to the spreadsheet.

“He’ll know I listened.”

Make the numbers tell the truth.

The truth was complicated.

Victor had committed crimes.

Many.

But Hale’s files exaggerated others.

Murders Victor had not ordered.

Shipments he had not controlled.

Bribes he had never paid.

Hale had spent years building insurance against Victor.

Khloe separated fact from fabrication.

Line by line.

Transaction by transaction.

On the fourth day, she walked into the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

She carried three encrypted drives.

Victor’s lawyer nearly had a heart attack.

“What are those?”

“The truth.”

“Do not say that inside this building.”

Khloe entered anyway.

The prosecutor was named Elena Ward.

Forty-six.

No patience.

Excellent suit.

She looked at Khloe.

“You understand you may be incriminating Mr. Rossi.”

“Yes.”

“Your attorney advised against this.”

“I’m not his attorney.”

“What are you?”

Khloe considered.

“His accountant.”

Elena almost smiled.

Khloe placed the drives down.

“This one contains transactions tied to Victor.”

Second.

“This one contains transactions Hale falsely attributed to Victor.”

Third.

“And this one contains the Reyes network.”

Elena stared.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“That’s not believable.”

“I want the truth separated.”

“You love him?”

Khloe said nothing.

Elena understood.

“That complicates your credibility.”

“No.”

Khloe leaned forward.

“It explains why I checked everything twice.”

Negotiations began.

Victor refused the first offer.

Twenty-two years.

He refused the second.

Fifteen.

The government wanted Hale.

Not merely conviction.

Network.

Judges.

Police.

Politicians.

Victor knew names.

Khloe knew accounts.

Together they could dismantle everything.

But Victor would not cooperate.

Until Elena Ward brought Khloe into the interview room.

Victor stared at her.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Nice to see you too.”

“You gave them the files.”

“Yes.”

His face hardened.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because some of it is true.”

Silence.

Victor leaned back.

“You’re helping them prosecute me.”

“I’m helping them prosecute what you actually did.”

He stared.

“And helping them prove what you didn’t.”

Victor almost smiled.

“That’s a strange definition of loyalty.”

“It’s the only kind I’m offering.”

Khloe placed a document on the table.

“Five years.”

Victor looked at it.

“What?”

“Plea agreement.”

“No.”

“Read it.”

“No.”

“Victor.”

“No prison.”

Khloe froze.

He continued.

“I won’t leave you for five years.”

Her chest hurt.

“This isn’t about leaving me.”

“It is to me.”

“Then you’re being selfish.”

Victor’s eyes flashed.

“Yes.”

Khloe sat across from him.

“Hale destroyed your father.”

Silence.

“He destroyed Carlo.”

Victor looked away.

“He built a system that corrupted half the city.”

“I know.”

“You can end it.”

“At the cost of five years.”

“Yes.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“Easy for you.”

Khloe slapped him.

The sound echoed.

Victor stared.

The guard outside looked through the window.

Khloe’s eyes filled with tears.

“Easy?”

Her voice shook.

“You think watching you go to prison is easy?”

Victor said nothing.

“You think sleeping alone is easy?”

She wiped her face angrily.

“You think I want five years without you?”

“Then why?”

“Because I love you enough to want you to become a man who can look at himself when this is finished.”

Victor’s face changed.

Khloe leaned forward.

“You told me actions matter.”

“Yes.”

“Then let yours matter.”

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, something had settled.

“What happens to you?”

“Witness protection was offered.”

“No.”

Khloe laughed through tears.

“I declined.”

“Khloe.”

“I’m staying.”

“Dangerous.”

“So are unsecured derivatives.”

Victor laughed.

A real laugh.

The first she had heard.

He reached across the table.

Khloe took his hand.

Five years became three after cooperation credit.

Three became twenty-six months after Victor provided evidence leading to eleven convictions.

Richard Hale received life.

Mateo Reyes was arrested in Mexico six months later.

Four judges resigned.

Two were convicted.

Seventeen police officers were indicted.

Three politicians disappeared from public life.

Victor’s legitimate companies entered court-supervised restructuring.

His criminal organization fractured.

Some men left.

Some were arrested.

Some discovered that the world continued without them.

Javier opened a private security company.

Legitimate.

Mostly.

Rosa refused to believe the “mostly.”

Khloe became the forensic director of Rossi Maritime under an independent board.

For the first time, every dollar was clean.

Victor hated prison.

Khloe visited every week.

Sometimes they talked for two hours.

Sometimes twenty minutes.

Sometimes neither knew what to say.

Love outside danger was harder than either expected.

There were arguments.

Jealousy.

Silence.

Bad days.

Victor had nightmares.

Khloe had them too.

She still heard the revolver sometimes.

Still smelled smoke.

Therapy helped.

Victor initially refused.

Khloe threatened not to marry him someday.

He attended therapy the following Tuesday.

She had not actually proposed.

He complained about this for six months.

Twenty-six months after his arrest, Victor Rossi walked through the gates of a federal facility wearing a charcoal suit.

Khloe waited beside a black sedan.

He stopped.

She looked different.

Hair shorter.

More confident.

No fear in the way she stood.

Victor approached.

Neither spoke.

Then Khloe smiled.

“You look older.”

Victor stared.

“I spent twenty-six months in federal prison.”

“I had spreadsheets.”

He laughed.

Then he pulled her against him.

Khloe buried her face against his chest.

Victor held her.

No guns.

No sniper.

No blood.

Just morning sunlight.

“You stayed,” he whispered.

Khloe looked up.

“I told you I would.”

Victor kissed her.

Slowly.

No camouflage.

No strategy.

No fear.

But their story was not finished.

Because when they reached the car, Javier stood beside it.

Victor smiled.

“Miss me?”

“No.”

Javier handed Khloe an envelope.

Her smile disappeared.

“What is it?”

“Arrived this morning.”

Khloe opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

The Beaumont Hotel.

The night they met.

Khloe crossing the ballroom.

Victor standing near the curtains.

Taken from above.

From the sniper’s position.

On the back were five words.

YOU NEVER FOUND THE SHOOTER.

Victor stared.

Khloe felt the old cold sensation return.

The sniper.

They had destroyed Reyes.

Exposed Hale.

Broken the network.

But the person who had placed the laser near Khloe’s head that first night had never been identified.

Victor looked at Javier.

“Find him.”

Javier shook his head.

“Already found her.”

Khloe froze.

“Her?”

Javier opened the rear door.

A woman sat inside.

Forties.

Blonde hair.

Handcuffed.

She looked at Khloe.

Then Victor.

And smiled.

“Hello, Khloe.”

Khloe stopped breathing.

Because she knew that woman.

“Megan?”

Her former boss.

The woman Khloe had planned to give the original audit report to.

The woman who had called her a brilliant accountant.

The woman who had disappeared the morning after the Beaumont gala.

May you like

Megan smiled.

“You really did ruin everything.”
