Chapter 2 - “What for?”

“To apologize for being an idiot 9 years ago.”
“You’re going to have to do a lot more than apologize, man.”
“I know.”
It took 20 minutes for Owen to send the number and another 10 for Theo to gather the courage to send the first message.
Clare’s phone buzzed while she was getting ready for bed.
Unknown number.
“Hi, Clare. It’s Theo. I got your number from Owen. He was reluctant but gave in. Can we talk?”
Clare looked at her reflection in the mirror.
She was not going to make it easy.
“Hi, Theodore. About what?”
The response came almost immediately.
“Theodore. Are you being that formal?”
“We haven’t seen each other in 9 years. I think formal is appropriate.”
“Fair. Can we have lunch together? I want to really catch up.”
“I’m busy this week.”
“Next week then.”
“I’ll check my schedule and let you know.”
“Clare, are you avoiding me?”
She smiled at the mirror, feeling a strange satisfaction.
“No. I just have a life now. Different from when I was 13 and followed you around like a puppy.”
The pause lasted longer this time.
“You remember that?”
“I remember a lot of things, Theodore. A lot.”
“Then let me take you to dinner and we’ll talk about those memories. Please.”
“Maybe.”
“Clare.”
“I’ll think about it.”
She left him hanging, not responding anymore, and lay down in bed smiling at the ceiling.

Now he was the one chasing.
