Chapter 3 - The next morning, Claire woke before sunrise with one thought repeating in her mind: the name on Adrian's phone.

She had known the person for years.

She had trusted him.

And that made the discovery harder to accept.

Adrian had refused to say the name aloud in the café.

He had only shown her the record.

Daniel Moretti.

Adrian's younger brother.

Claire sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the photograph from the envelope.

Daniel had always been different from Adrian.

Where Adrian was reserved, Daniel was warm.

Where Adrian spoke carefully, Daniel filled silence with stories.

During Claire's first year of marriage, Daniel had been the one who made her feel welcome in a family she initially found intimidating.

He called her “sister” before Adrian ever did.

He remembered her birthday.

He sent flowers when her mother was ill.

He had even driven across Manhattan one winter night when Claire's car broke down.

The idea that he could have forged her signature felt impossible.

But the bank record was real.

At eight in the morning, Adrian arrived outside her building.

Claire saw him from the window.

She almost ignored him.

Instead, she went downstairs.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“I know.”

“What did you find?”

“More than I expected.”

He handed her a folder.

“Daniel's company received payments from two of the subsidiaries involved in the investigation.”

Claire opened the folder.

There were dates.

Amounts.

Company names.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that would make a stranger immediately understand.

But Claire had worked at Moretti Capital long enough to recognize the pattern.

Small payments.

Different accounts.

Different dates.

Always below thresholds that would trigger internal review.

“Someone was moving money slowly,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

She looked at him.

“Have you spoken to Daniel?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to understand the evidence before I accuse him of anything.”

Claire nodded.

That was the Adrian she remembered.

Careful.

Methodical.

But then she noticed something.

“What is this?”

She pointed to a line near the bottom.

Adrian didn't answer.

“Adrian?”

He took a breath.

“That payment was made eighteen days before we separated.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“And?”

“The account used your authorization.”

She stared at the document.

“My authorization?”

“Yes.”

“That can't be.”

“I know.”

She looked up.

“You said the signature might have been forged.”

“I said I thought it might have been.”

“And now?”

“Now I'm not sure.”

The words hurt.

Not because she believed he suspected her.

Because she remembered how lonely she had felt during those final months.

“How long have you known about this?”

“Since three weeks after our divorce.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“You knew after we separated and never told me?”

“I didn't have proof.”

“You could have told me there was an investigation.”

“I thought it was safer not to.”

“Again.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Always safer not to tell Claire.”

Adrian looked down.

“I deserved that.”

The silence between them stretched.

Finally Claire closed the folder.

“Where is Daniel?”

“I don't know.”

“Then find him.”

They found him that afternoon at the public library near Bryant Park.

Daniel was sitting by a window, reading an old paperback.

He looked up when Adrian approached.

Then he saw Claire.

His smile disappeared.

“Claire.”

She stopped several feet away.

“Daniel.”

He closed the book.

“What are you doing here?”

Adrian placed the folder on the table.

Daniel looked at it.

He didn't touch it.

“I was hoping you'd come to me before this.”

Claire felt a chill.

“You knew?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I knew someone would eventually find out.”

Adrian pulled out a chair.

“Sit.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“I didn't steal anything.”

Claire spoke quietly.

“Then tell us what happened.”

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then he sat.

“It started three years ago.”

He folded his hands.

“Dad's health was getting worse.

The company was changing.

Adrian was taking over more responsibility.

There were people inside the company who believed I should have had a larger role.”

Adrian's expression remained neutral.

Daniel continued.

“I didn't care about the position.”

“Then what did you care about?”

Claire asked.

“My father's trust.”

He looked at Adrian.

“He never trusted me the way he trusted you.”

Adrian frowned.

“That isn't true.”

“It felt true.”

Claire watched them.

The brothers were not enemies.

They were something more complicated.

Two people who had spent years measuring themselves against the same standard.

Daniel continued.

“I made some bad decisions.”

“Did you move the money?”

“Yes.”

Claire's heart sank.

“But I didn't keep it.”

“What did you do with it?”

“I moved it into a temporary account.”

“Why?”

“To pay debts the company owed to several small suppliers.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You had no authority.”

“I know.”

“You used Claire's authorization.”

“I didn't forge it.”

Claire looked up sharply.

Daniel's voice softened.

“Claire signed the paperwork.”

“For the foundation.”

“Yes.”

“Not for those transfers.”

“I know.”

“Then how—?”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Because the original authorization was copied into the internal system.

Someone changed the permissions.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I never found out.”

Claire felt the pieces moving.

May you like

“So you moved the money without authorization.”

“Yes.”
