Chapter 15

CHAPTER 15
THE FIRST HEIR
We found Michael before midnight.
Or rather, we found where they had hidden him.
An abandoned medical facility north of the island.
The place smelled like antiseptic and rain.
Damon kicked the locked door open.
“Michael!”
No answer.
We moved through the hallway.
Room after room.
Empty.
Until Eli stopped.
“Mom.”
He pointed.
A red light blinked beneath one door.
Damon opened it.
Michael was lying on a narrow bed.
Alive.
Still unconscious.
Beside him sat Marian.
My breath caught.
“Marian.”
She looked at us.
“I knew you'd come.”
Damon stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Thomas was alive?”
Marian nodded.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because if I told you, you would have come looking for him.”
“And?”
“And you would have died.”
Damon laughed bitterly.
“You keep deciding what is best for me.”
Marian looked at him.
“Your father taught me to.”
Damon went silent.
I walked to Michael.
He looked fragile.
Almost peaceful.
A machine beside him measured his heartbeat.
“Can he wake up?”
Marian nodded.
“He can.”
“Then why hasn't he?”
“Because someone keeps him sedated.”
My stomach turned.
“Who?”
Marian looked at Eli.
“Your son.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Eli has something they need.”
“What?”
“His blood.”
Damon's face hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
Marian reached into her coat.
She removed a document.
“The trust requires proof of direct descent.”
Damon looked confused.
“Michael is already proof.”
“No.”
Marian shook her head.
“Michael is the first heir.”
She pointed at Eli.
“But Eli is the confirmation.”
I stared.
“What confirmation?”
“That the Vale bloodline continued through Anna's daughter.”
My heart stopped.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“And Eli.”
“Yes.”
Marian handed the document to Damon.
He read it.
His eyes widened.
“What?”
I took the paper.
At the bottom was a sentence written in old ink.
The final heir shall be the child born of the hidden daughter of the Vale bloodline and the last living Vale son.
I looked at Damon.
“No.”
He whispered.
“Evelyn…”
“That's us.”
Marian nodded.
“That's why they waited.”
“For Eli.”
“For you.”
I shook my head.
“But why would the trust require us?”
“Because Elias Vale knew the family would eventually become corrupt.”
Marian looked at Michael.
“He created a final heir outside the family system.”
Damon frowned.
“Eli.”
“Yes.”
“And if Eli inherits?”
“Every old claim disappears.”
I understood.
Thomas wasn't trying to control Eli simply because of money.
He was trying to prevent Eli from becoming the one person who could erase the power structure his family had built.
Damon looked at me.
“And if Eli inherits, what happens to me?”
Marian's face tightened.
“You lose your claim.”
“That's it?”
“No.”
She hesitated.
“Your father's people will consider you a threat.”
Damon exhaled.
“So that's why he wants me dead.”
“Yes.”
Eli suddenly spoke.
“Mom?”
I turned.
He was staring at Michael.
“Why does he look like Grandma?”
I walked to him.
“What do you mean?”
Eli pointed.
“The scar.”
I looked at Michael's face.
There was a small scar near his temple.
Just like the scar in one of Anna's photographs.
I touched it gently.
Marian's eyes filled with tears.
“Anna used to say he had her eyes.”
My throat tightened.
“You knew my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Did she love him?”
Marian smiled sadly.
“She never stopped.”
I looked at Michael.
“My mother thought she had lost him.”
“She was told he died.”
“By Thomas?”
Marian nodded.
“But he wasn't dead.”
“No.”
“He was placed in a facility.”
“And Anna spent the rest of her life believing her son was gone.”
I closed my eyes.
Suddenly every memory of my mother changed.
Every silence.
Every tear.
Every unexplained absence.
She hadn't abandoned me emotionally because she didn't care.
She had been grieving someone she believed had been murdered by her own family.
I whispered,
“She should have told me.”
“She was afraid.”
“So was I.”
Damon took my hand.
Marian looked at us.
“You still have time.”
“For what?”
“To end this.”
I looked at her.
“How?”
“Wake Michael.”
“How?”
“Eli.”
We all looked at him.
Eli swallowed.
“What am I supposed to do?”
Marian knelt.
“Talk to him.”
“What?”
“Your blood may activate the final inheritance protocol.”
Damon shook his head.
“That sounds insane.”
Marian smiled.
“In this family, that's usually how you know it's true.”
She took a small needle from a medical tray.
Damon immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
Marian looked at him.
“It is a tiny blood sample.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I won't let anyone take anything from him.”
Eli interrupted.
“Dad.”
Damon turned.
“I want to help.”
“No.”
“Dad.”
Eli's voice became firmer.
“If I can wake him, maybe we can stop this.”
Damon crouched.
“Eli, you don't have to save everyone.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Eli looked at me.
“Because Mom saved me.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“And Dad came back.”
He looked at Damon.
“I want us to stay together.”
Damon pulled him into his arms.
I looked away.
For a moment, the world felt normal.
A father.
A son.
A mother.
A family.
Then the machine beside Michael began to beep.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
His fingers moved.
Marian gasped.
“Michael?”
His eyes opened.
Slowly.
Confused.
He looked around.
Then his eyes found me.
His lips moved.
I leaned closer.
“What?”
His voice was barely audible.
“Anna…”
I covered my mouth.
He thought I was her.
“No,” I whispered.
“I’m Evelyn.”
His eyes widened.
“Evelyn?”
I nodded.
His face crumpled.
“You survived.”
I began crying.
“You knew me?”
“Your mother…”
He tried to sit up.
Damon helped him.
Michael looked at Damon.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Michael whispered,
“You look like him.”
“Thomas?”
Michael shook his head.
“Elias.”
The room went silent.
Damon stared.
“You knew Elias?”
Michael smiled faintly.
“He was my father.”
Then his expression changed.
“He told me something.”
“What?”
Michael looked toward the clock.
“Before he died, he said the trust was never about money.”
“What was it about?”
Michael's eyes moved to Eli.
“It was about the person who would finally break the Vale family.”
I held Eli's hand.
“Who?”
Michael smiled.
“You.”
The lights flickered.
Marian stood.
“No.”
A distant alarm began to sound.
Damon looked toward the door.
“They found us.”
Michael grabbed his arm.
“Damon.”
“What?”
“Your father isn't alone.”
Damon froze.
“Who is with him?”
Michael's eyes filled with fear.
May you like
“Celeste.”
My heart stopped.
