Chapter 5 - THE BOY WHO CARRIED A SECRETThe rain began before dawn.

Nora stood by the kitchen window, watching water slide down the glass in crooked lines. She had barely slept. Adrian Vale’s words kept circling through her mind.

If anything happened to Daniel, find someone named Nora.

Why her?

She had never met Lucia Bellini. At least, not that she could remember. She had no connection to St. Agnes Hospital beyond her work as a nurse, and she had never been involved with the Carrai family before Silvio’s illness brought her into their lives.

Yet somehow, her name had been written into a story that began long before she knew it existed.

Behind her, Enzo entered the kitchen, already dressed in a dark suit. He carried two cups of coffee and placed one beside her.

“You haven't touched the one I brought you an hour ago,” he said.

“I didn't realize you were keeping count.”

“I keep count of everything that concerns you.”

Nora turned to face him. “That's exactly what worries me about you.”

A faint smile touched his mouth, but it disappeared when he noticed the photograph on the table.

Lucia Bellini stood beside a young boy in the picture. The boy wore a small silver pendant shaped like a boat.

Enzo picked it up carefully.

“Adrian agreed to meet us tonight,” he said. “He wants to bring Daniel.”

“Does Daniel know why?”

“No.”

“Then we're not ambushing him.”

Enzo studied her. “You want to tell him the truth before we know what the truth is?”

“I want to meet him without making him feel like a suspect in his own life.”

For a moment, Enzo said nothing.

Then he nodded.

“All right.”

Nora blinked. “That was surprisingly easy.”

“Don't get used to it.”

She almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Enzo's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen, and the atmosphere in the room changed.

“What is it?” Nora asked.

“My father.”

Enzo answered the call.

Silvio's voice came through, weak but unmistakable.

“Bring the photograph.”

Enzo straightened. “Father, you should be resting.”

“Bring. The. Photograph.”

The call ended.

Nora looked at Enzo.

“He recognizes her,” she whispered.

“I think he does.”

“Then why hasn't he said anything?”

Enzo slipped the phone into his pocket.

“Because whatever he remembers about Lucia Bellini, it frightens him more than the people who have tried to kill him.”

Silvio was sitting upright when they entered his room.

His face remained pale, and the oxygen tube beneath his nose made him look more fragile than Nora had ever seen him. Yet his eyes were sharp.

He reached for the photograph.

Nora handed it to him.

The moment he saw Lucia, his fingers tightened around the paper.

“Lucia,” he whispered.

Enzo moved closer. “You knew her?”

Silvio did not answer immediately.

Instead, he stared at the boy beside her.

Then he closed his eyes.

“Daniel.”

Nora felt the blood drain from her face.

“You know the boy's name?”

Silvio nodded once.

Enzo's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Who is he?”

Silvio looked at his son, and something like regret crossed his face.

“A child,” he said slowly, “who should never have been dragged into our world.”

“Is he your grandson?” Enzo asked.

Silvio's expression crumpled.

“I don't know.”

“Then what do you know?”

Silvio looked down at the photograph.

“I know that Lucia came to me eleven years ago. She was frightened. She asked for help.”

“Help with what?”

“She said a child had been born who could destroy everything.”

Nora felt a chill travel down her spine.

“What did she mean?”

Silvio's gaze shifted toward her.

“I never found out. Before I could ask her again, she disappeared.”

“Did you try to find her?” Enzo demanded.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you tell everyone she was dead?”

Silvio's answer came as a whisper.

“Because someone showed me a body.”

Silence filled the room.

Nora stepped closer to the bed.

“Did you identify it yourself?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Silvio's eyes filled with tears.

“Your uncle.”

Enzo went still.

His uncle, Matteo Carrai, had died fifteen years earlier in what the family described as a boating accident. He had been the only relative Silvio had ever openly feared.

“Matteo was dead before Lucia disappeared,” Enzo said.

Silvio shook his head.

“No. Matteo died afterward.”

Nora looked at Enzo.

Neither of them spoke.

For the first time, Nora understood that the secrets surrounding Lucia Bellini might be older, darker, and far more dangerous than either of them had imagined.

And somewhere in Boston, a young man named Daniel Vale was living inside the consequences.
