Chapter 4 - THE CAMERAS BENEATH THE BLACK TRIM

I installed the cameras after Arthur’s watches disappeared.
Not because I wanted to spy on Daniel.
Because every physical fact inside the house had begun changing after I named it.
My security contractor, June Park, placed small cameras beneath the kitchen trim, beside the study bookshelves, and under the garden eaves.
The system uploaded to an encrypted account Vanessa did not know existed.
I showed Daniel the access portal the morning after the haircut.
He stared at the screen.
“You recorded the house?”
“Public areas and my study.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Would you have agreed?”
He remained silent.
“You would have told Vanessa.”
“I might have.”
“That is why.”
The archive confirmed several events.
Chloe entered Arthur’s study three weeks before the first watch disappeared.
She opened the display cabinet using a key taken from the desk.
She removed the gold watch, placed it inside her handbag, and later returned with Vanessa.
They photographed the cabinet from several angles.
Two days later, the steel watch vanished during a charity dinner.
The camera covering the study went offline for nine minutes.
Before the interruption, Vanessa entered with a man wearing a dark coat.
His face remained outside the frame.
Only one hand appeared.
A signet ring showed briefly.
He disconnected the router.
When the camera resumed, the second watch was gone.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who is that?”
“I don’t know.”
“Could it be Russell?”
“I have met Russell twice. I do not know his hands.”

The cameras showed other disturbing patterns.
Vanessa entering my bedroom while I slept.
Photographing trust documents.
Removing envelopes from my desk.
Replacing my vitamin bottle with another identical bottle.
The angle did not reveal what was inside.
One clip showed her carrying my phone into the kitchen, unlocking it while I was in physical therapy, and handing it to Chloe.
Chloe typed messages.
Those were likely the messages sent to Daniel in my name.
The hallway camera captured the night before my fall.
Vanessa walked through carrying two glasses.
One contained water.
The other contained amber tea.
She entered my room.
Twenty minutes later, I emerged unsteady.
The camera did not show whether she placed anything in the tea.
It showed timing.
At the top of the stairs, I gripped the rail.
Vanessa followed.
Then the video froze for forty-seven seconds.
When it resumed, I lay on the floor.
Vanessa stood over me holding the water glass.

She poured it beside my hand.
Daniel turned away from the screen.
“She staged the spill.”
“Possibly.”
“You think she pushed you.”
“I do not remember.”
“Mom.”
“I will not invent memory because the footage is incomplete.”
He looked toward me.
“You always do that.”
“Do what?”
“Stay precise when the truth is unbearable.”
“Your father taught me.”
The garden footage was clearer.
Vanessa and Chloe wheeled me outside at 9:32 in the morning.
Vanessa locked the chair.
Chloe placed the phone on the table.
Before cutting my hair, they discussed documents.
CHLOE: What if she still won’t sign?
VANESSA: She will after Daniel sees how unstable she gets.
CHLOE: Russell said today was the deadline.
VANESSA: Then Russell can wait until I’m finished.
Daniel stopped the recording.
“Russell?”
“Your chief financial officer.”
“He said the lease was postponed.”
“Vanessa did not believe so.”
We continued.
Vanessa told me the house would eventually belong to Daniel.
Then to her.
She said my refusal delayed Asterline’s future.
She asked whether I wanted my son to lose the company because I was sentimental about old roses.
I answered:
“If the company survives only by taking my home, it should not survive.”

Vanessa looked toward the camera phone and smiled.
That line, isolated, could make me sound vindictive.
She had been collecting fragments.
The footage also showed her claiming pregnancy and threatening to accuse me of attacking her.
When Daniel appeared, Chloe reached toward the garden table.
Not for the champagne.
For a small black drive beside Vanessa’s phone.
The wide camera showed her slip it into her dress pocket before police arrived.
Daniel paused the video.
“What was that?”
“I don’t know.”
Officer Ortiz obtained a warrant for Chloe’s electronic devices and clothing from that day.
The black drive was not recovered.
Chloe said it was a lipstick tube.
The footage showed a rectangular object with a metal connector.
The next morning, the camera system received an attempted remote login from an account labeled R.G.
Daniel stared at the letters.
Russell Greer.
But usernames were not proof of identity.
Someone wanted us to believe Russell had tried to enter the archive.
May you like
Or Russell had been careless enough to use his initials.
Either possibility meant the garden incident extended far beyond scissors.
