Chapter 4: The Unmasking on Stage

Chapter 4: The Unmasking on Stage

A collective gasp echoed across the grand ballroom.

Preston’s hand hovered awkwardly in the air, his face draining of color so fast it looked as though he had been struck.

Beside him, Veronica half-rose from her chair, her diamond necklace catching the glare of the stage lights.

"Mr... Mr. Grant?" Preston stammered, his microphone picking up his ragged breath. "I think there’s been a misunderstanding.

The agreement we drafted with Meridian Horizon—"

"Meridian Horizon is a subsidiary of Grant Meridian Partners," my father interrupted, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

"And as of five o'clock this afternoon, Caldwell Heritage Resorts has defaulted on its forty-two-million-dollar primary credit line.

Furthermore, our forensic auditors have uncovered systematic embezzlement, falsified revenue reports, and illegal asset transfers executed by you and your mother over the last eighteen months."

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Journalists scrambled forward, camera flashes exploding like strobe lights against the stage.

Board members stood up, shouting questions, while security guards hesitated, completely unsure of who they were supposed to protect.

"This is outrageous!" Veronica shrieked, stepping up to the podium and pushing her son aside. "You can't do this! This is a private event! Who do you think you are?!"

I stepped forward, moving past my father until I was standing directly in front of Veronica and Preston.

The stage lights burned against my sensitive eyes through the dark lenses of my mask, but I didn't flinch. I reached up with both hands, unclasped the silk ribbon behind my head, and slowly removed the Venetian mask.

The room caught its breath.

Even under the heavy stage makeup applied by my stylists, the faint yellowish bruising around my eye sockets and the bloodshot, delicate capillaries of my eyes were clearly visible under the harsh spotlight.

Preston stumbled backward, his knees knocking against the mahogany chair behind him.

"A... Amelia?" he gasped, his voice cracking like thin ice. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in Vermont..."

"I was never in Vermont, Preston," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the lapel microphone attached to my gown. "I was in the burn unit at Saint Jude's Hospital, having chemical residue flushed from my corneas."

Veronica’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. She looked from my face to William Grant, and then back to me, her mind frantically trying to connect the pieces of a puzzle she had been too arrogant to see.

"Grant..." Veronica whispered, her voice trembling. "Amelia... Grant?"

"You spent weeks researching my background before Preston proposed," I said, taking a step toward her.

"You saw that my mother worked for the government, saw that I drove an old car and worked in an archive, and you assumed I was a penniless nobody your son could control. You thought my family was too poor and powerless to fight back."

"Amelia, please!" Preston rushed forward, dropping to one knee right there on the stage, his hands reaching out toward my dress in a desperate, pathetic gesture of supplication.

"Amelia, darling, listen to me! It was an accident! My mother was hysterical that morning! I was just trying to keep the peace! You know I love you!"

"You held my arms, Preston," I said down to him, my voice colder than deep ocean water.

"I screamed your name, begging you to help me, and you gripped my arms tighter so your mother could spray industrial disinfectant directly into my face a second time."

The crowd gasps turned into sharp, disgusted murmurs. Several high-profile investors in the front row turned their backs on the stage entirely.

"You told me I wasn't clean enough for your family," I continued, looking directly at Veronica, who was now clutching her podium as if she might collapse. "You told me I was a gutter girl who needed to learn her place."

"I... I didn't know!" Veronica sobbed, all her aristocratic composure vanishing into frantic desperation. "Amelia, please! We are family now! We can fix this! The hotels... the Caldwell name... it’s everything we have!"
