Chapter 8 - Their Mothers Had Shared a Secret—and It Changed EverythingThe song was called “Blue Harbor.”

It had never been commercially released.

Rosalie learned that from an old cassette hidden inside the second music box.

Her mother’s voice filled Alessandro’s study.

“If Rosalie and Vanessa are hearing this together, then Evelyn has lost control of the story.”

Vanessa sat across from Rosalie.

Neither woman moved.

Alessandro stood behind Rosalie.

Leo guarded the door.

The recording continued.

“Evelyn Hayes was my friend.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Rosalie’s mother spoke calmly.

“We met before any of this. Before Vittorio. Before Michael. Before Robert Hayes.”

A pause.

“We were nineteen.”

Rosalie tried to imagine her mother at nineteen.

Healthy.

Young.

Before cancer.

“Evelyn was brilliant. Ambitious. Angry at the world for underestimating her.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“That sounds right.”

“We loved each other like sisters.”

Rosalie glanced at Vanessa.

“Then Evelyn met Matteo Rossi.”

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“He convinced her power was the only safety worth having. She began moving money. Making alliances. Building something underneath Vittorio and Robert.”

The tape crackled.

“I discovered it by accident. I told Michael. Michael investigated.”

Rosalie’s chest tightened.

“I begged Evelyn to stop.”

Her mother’s voice broke slightly.

“She told me I was weak.”

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“She said love makes people controllable.”

Rosalie felt Alessandro’s hand settle gently against the back of her chair.

“She was wrong.”

The recording continued.

“Michael and I divided the evidence. Vittorio agreed to help. But none of us understood how far Matteo and Evelyn would go.”

A long silence.

“If Michael dies, Evelyn did it.”

Rosalie closed her eyes.

There it was.

Confirmation.

“If Vittorio dies, Matteo did it.”

Alessandro’s hand tightened.

“And if I die…”

Her mother inhaled shakily.

“Then perhaps cancer was not the only thing killing me.”

Rosalie’s eyes opened.

“What?”

She looked at Alessandro.

He was equally stunned.

The recording continued.

“I began getting sicker after Evelyn visited me.”

Rosalie stood.

“No.”

“Doctors believed the progression was natural. Perhaps it was. But if you are hearing this, test the hair sample sealed with this recording.”

Leo immediately searched the music box.

A narrow compartment contained a small envelope.

Inside was a lock of dark hair.

Rosalie’s mother’s.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“My God.”

Rosalie’s medical mind took control because the alternative was collapsing.

“Heavy metals.”

“What?” Alessandro asked.

“If she suspected poisoning, hair can preserve evidence.”

“After twenty years?”

“Some substances, yes.”

Rosalie looked at Leo.

“I need an independent toxicology laboratory.”

“You’ll have three.”

The results arrived thirty-six hours later.

Arsenic.

Repeated exposure.

Low doses.

Over months.

Rosalie stared at the report until the words stopped looking real.

Her mother had cancer.

But someone had accelerated her death.

Evelyn Hayes.

Vanessa vomited when she heard.

Rosalie did not cry.

Not immediately.

She walked into the estate garden and stood beneath an oak tree.

Alessandro followed but kept ten feet between them.

“Come here,” she finally said.

He did.

Rosalie pressed her forehead into his chest.

Then she broke.

Not elegantly.

Not quietly.

Twenty years of grief changed shape inside her.

Her father had been murdered.

Her mother poisoned.

Her childhood constructed around lies designed to keep her alive.

Alessandro held her.

He did not tell her it would be okay.

It would not.

Some things were not okay.

He simply remained.

When Rosalie finally pulled away, her face was wet.

“I want her arrested.”

Alessandro’s expression changed slightly.

Not disappointed.

Surprised.

“You expected me to say killed?”

“I didn’t know.”

“I’m not you.”

“I know.”

“I want her alive.”

“Why?”

“So she has to hear the evidence.”

Rosalie wiped her face.

“So Vanessa hears it.”

She looked toward the house.

“And because my parents spent their lives trying to expose these people. If we murder everyone involved, we become another secret.”

Alessandro considered her words.

Then nodded.

“Alive.”

That promise changed the strategy.

Instead of hunting Evelyn, they would expose her.

The ledger became bait.

Vanessa contacted her mother.

She pretended to be terrified.

Desperate.

Ready to betray Alessandro.

Evelyn answered immediately.

“Bring Rosalie’s piece,” she instructed.

“Where?”

“Pier 19. Midnight tomorrow.”

Alessandro hated the plan.

“You’re not going.”

Rosalie crossed her arms.

“We’ve covered this.”

“She wants you.”

“That’s why I’m useful.”

“She killed your parents.”

“Which is why she’ll believe I’m emotional enough to make mistakes.”

“You are emotional.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t criticism.”

“Sounded like it.”

Alessandro paced.

Rosalie watched him.

“You can’t protect me by locking me away.”

“I can try.”

“I’ll climb out a window.”

“I’ll reinforce them.”

“I’ll sedate you.”

He stopped.

Leo, sitting in the corner, suddenly found his phone fascinating.

Rosalie approached Alessandro.

“We do this properly.”

“Properly.”

“Police.”

“No.”

“Federal agents.”

“No.”

“Alessandro.”

“The network includes law enforcement.”

“The ledger includes names. We find someone outside the jurisdiction.”

Leo spoke.

“I know someone.”

Both turned.

“FBI,” Leo said.

Alessandro looked betrayed.

“You know an FBI agent?”

“Technically she knows me.”

“How?”

“She arrested me.”

Rosalie blinked.

“Romantic.”

“Not particularly.”

The agent was Dana Pierce.

Forty-four.

Sharp-eyed.

Unimpressed by Alessandro.

Rosalie liked her immediately.

They met secretly in an abandoned medical office owned by one of Alessandro’s legitimate companies.

Dana reviewed copies of the evidence.

“This can dismantle half the corruption network in the state.”

“Can you protect Vanessa?” Rosalie asked.

Dana looked at her.

“If she testifies.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I will.”

“Can you protect Rosalie?” Alessandro asked.

Dana smiled slightly.

“You’re asking the federal government to protect your fiancée?”

“I’m asking whether you’re competent.”

“I’m deciding whether to arrest you.”

“Get in line.”

Rosalie rubbed her temples.

“Children.”

Both looked at her.

The operation was set.

Vanessa would bring a fake drive.

Rosalie would accompany her.

Federal tactical teams would surround Pier 19.

Alessandro would remain away.

That was the agreement.

Rosalie knew immediately he would break it.

At 11:58 the next night, she and Vanessa entered the abandoned warehouse.

Evelyn Hayes stood beneath a hanging industrial light.

She was sixty-one.

Elegant.

Silver-blonde hair.

Black coat.

Beside her stood a tall man with a scar across his mouth.

Matteo Rossi.

Alessandro’s uncle.

Rosalie recognized the family resemblance instantly.

Matteo smiled.

“Michael’s daughter.”

Rosalie’s skin crawled.

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

“You disappoint me.”

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“I learned from you.”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

“Give me the drive.”

Rosalie held it.

“Tell me why you killed my father.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Your father killed himself the moment he chose morality over survival.”

“You cut his brakes.”

“Matteo handled mechanics.”

Matteo smiled.

Rosalie wanted to hit him.

She didn’t.

“Why poison my mother?”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Because she betrayed me.”

“She was your friend.”

“She chose Michael.”

“That’s why?”

“She chose weakness.”

Rosalie stared at the woman.

For twenty years, Evelyn had existed as a shadow over her family.

Now she looked small.

Not physically.

Morally.

“You destroyed everyone who loved you because you thought love made them weak.”

Evelyn raised a gun.

“No.”

She aimed at Rosalie.

“I destroyed them because they stood between me and what was mine.”

A red laser appeared on Evelyn’s chest.

Federal sniper.

Dana’s voice exploded through hidden speakers.

“Evelyn Hayes! Drop the weapon!”

Chaos.

Matteo fired first.

Vanessa screamed.

Rosalie hit the floor.

Agents breached from three sides.

Gunfire thundered.

Evelyn ran.

Matteo grabbed Vanessa and dragged her backward.

Rosalie crawled behind a steel support.

Then she saw him.

Alessandro.

Of course.

He emerged from the western entrance.

Gun raised.

Furious.

“Matteo!”

His uncle turned.

For a moment, the two Rossi men stared at each other across twenty years of betrayal.

Matteo smiled.

“You look exactly like your father.”

Alessandro fired.

The bullet struck Matteo’s shoulder.

Vanessa fell free.

Agents swarmed.

Evelyn was tackled before reaching the exit.

Matteo dropped his weapon.

It was over.

Almost.

Then Rosalie saw the blood.

Alessandro looked down.

A dark stain spread across his shirt.

She ran.

“No.”

He touched his abdomen.

“Technically—”

“Don’t you dare.”

His knees buckled.

Rosalie caught him.

“Fifth time,” she said, pressing both hands against the wound.

His face went pale.

“You said you’d marry an accountant.”

“If you die, I’ll resurrect you and kill you.”

He smiled weakly.

“There’s my girl.”

“Stay awake.”

“Bossy.”

“Alessandro.”

His eyes began to close.

Rosalie slapped his cheek.

“Stay with me.”

His gray eyes opened again.

Around them, federal agents shouted.

Evelyn screamed at Vanessa.

Matteo lay bleeding in handcuffs.

None of it mattered.

Rosalie pressed harder.

“Remember the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“You came back once.”

His hand found hers.

“I remember.”

“Do it again.”

He smiled faintly.

“For you?”

“For me.”

His fingers tightened.

May you like

“Always.”

Then the ambulance doors closed around them.
