Chapter 12 - THE LAST ACCOUNTThey left before sunrise.

Lily hated leaving Almost.

She hated the feeling of locking the studio when there was still work waiting for her inside.

But this time, the unfinished canvases didn't feel like unfinished paintings.

They felt like unfinished lives.

Adrian drove.

Lily sat beside him.

Clara followed in another car.

James followed behind her.

Sarah and Evelyn had gone separately.

Nobody trusted anyone enough to travel together.

That was the strange thing about secrets.

Even when you found the truth, it didn't make you feel safer.

It only showed you how many people had lied.

The drive north was quiet.

After three hours, Lily looked at Adrian.

"Do you remember Michigan?"

"Yes."

"Your first company."

"Yes."

"Thomas."

"Yes."

She looked out the window.

"Did you ever come here with him?"

Adrian was silent.

"Once."

"When?"

"Twenty-three."

"What happened?"

"We stayed one night."

"At the house?"

"No."

"Where?"

"A motel."

Lily looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because I didn't know about the house."

"Then why did Thomas bring you?"

"He wanted to show me something."

"What?"

Adrian's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"He wanted me to understand that leaving Rook wasn't the same thing as escaping him."

Lily turned toward him.

"What did he mean?"

"I didn't understand then."

"And now?"

"Now I think he was telling me that Rook's influence wasn't physical."

"It was psychological."

"Exactly."

Lily was quiet.

After a while she asked:

"Did you love him?"

Adrian looked at the road.

"Thomas?"

"Yes."

He thought about it.

"I respected him."

"That's not what I asked."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"I don't use that word easily."

"I know."

"But yes."

Lily leaned back.

"Then I wish I'd known."

"He wanted you to."

"What?"

"Know that he loved you."

Lily swallowed.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Adrian reached across the console.

His fingers found hers.

She held on.

The house appeared just after noon.

It was smaller than Lily expected.

Wooden.

Gray.

A narrow porch overlooking the lake.

No neighbors.

No visible road beyond the trees.

The mailbox had no name.

Lily stepped out of the car.

The air smelled like pine and cold water.

She walked slowly toward the house.

Adrian followed.

The key Evelyn had given them fit the front door.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Furniture.

Shelves.

A fireplace.

A dining table.

On the wall hung an old clock.

It had stopped at 2:17.

Lily stared at it.

"My father hated broken clocks."

Adrian looked at it.

"Then it's probably not broken."

He walked toward the clock.

Removed it.

Behind it was a small hole.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Lily opened it.

One word.

BASEMENT.

She laughed once.

"Of course."

Adrian smiled.

"Thomas liked dramatic entrances."

They found the basement beneath a trapdoor in the kitchen.

It was colder downstairs.

There were shelves filled with old boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Ledgers.

Lily moved slowly through them.

Then she saw a name.

Daniel Carew.

Her stomach turned.

She picked up the folder.

Adrian came beside her.

"Why is he here?"

Inside were financial records.

Payments.

Transfers.

Dates.

Daniel had not been important.

Not really.

He had been useful.

A small piece in a larger machine.

Lily closed the folder.

"I thought this was over."

"It is," Adrian said.

She looked at him.

"Then why does it keep coming back?"

"Because history doesn't disappear just because we stop looking at it."

She hated that he was right.

Clara called from the other side of the basement.

"Adrian."

They turned.

She was standing beside a steel cabinet.

"This is locked."

Adrian approached.

Lily followed.

Clara pointed at the keypad.

"Four digits."

Lily looked around.

The clock.

2:17.

She entered 0217.

The lock opened.

Inside was a computer.

Old.

But preserved.

There was one folder.

LAST ACCOUNT

Adrian didn't touch it.

Neither did Clara.

Lily sat in front of it.

"What if this destroys everything?"

Adrian stood behind her.

"Then we'll decide what to do with it."

"What if it destroys innocent people?"

"Then we don't release it blindly."

"What if it destroys you?"

He looked at her.

"Then it destroys me."

She turned.

"You're very calm."

"I'm not."

She saw it.

His hands were shaking slightly.

Lily reached for him.

"Then don't pretend."

He looked down at her.

"I'm scared."

She squeezed his hand.

"Good."

"Good?"

"Means you're still human."

He laughed quietly.

She opened the folder.

There were hundreds of files.

Names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Then she saw something unexpected.

A folder named:

MARSH, THOMAS — PERSONAL

She opened it.

There was a video.

She pressed play.

Her father appeared on the screen.

Older than she remembered.

Tired.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Lily."

She stopped breathing.

"If you're watching this, I'm probably gone."

Adrian looked away.

Thomas continued.

"I wish I could tell you that I left you enough answers."

He smiled sadly.

"I didn't."

Lily's eyes filled.

"I left you choices."

The video continued.

"I need you to understand something. The Last Account is not mine."

Thomas paused.

"I didn't create it."

He leaned closer.

"I found it."

The screen changed.

A map appeared.

Thomas continued.

"I discovered that Rook had been collecting leverage for decades. But he wasn't the only one."

Images appeared.

Different men.

Different companies.

Different countries.

Different governments.

"It became a system that no single person controlled."

Lily whispered:

"Jesus."

Thomas continued.

"The only way to destroy it is not to expose everyone."

The video paused.

Then:

"The only way is to remove the system's ability to control people."

Adrian understood first.

"He wants us to dismantle the leverage."

Lily looked at him.

The video continued.

"I hid copies in places nobody would connect."

"Some are here."

"Some are with people I trusted."

"One is with Sarah."

Sarah's name appeared on the screen.

Lily's heart tightened.

"And one..."

Thomas stopped.

His expression changed.

He looked frightened.

"One is with the person I failed to protect."

The video ended.

Silence.

Lily stared at the black screen.

"Who?"

Clara walked toward the computer.

"There's another file."

She opened it.

A photograph appeared.

A young woman.

Lily recognized her.

Sarah.

But she was standing beside Thomas.

And beside them—

A little boy.

Adrian.

The date was twenty-four years earlier.

Lily stared.

"Why is Adrian there?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Sarah entered the basement.

She had heard enough.

"Because that's the day everything started."

Adrian turned.

"What did you do?"

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"I saved your life."

He stared.

"From whom?"

"From Rook."

She looked at Lily.

"And from Thomas."

Lily stood.

"What?"

Sarah took a breath.

"Your father wanted to expose the network immediately."

"He should have."

"No."

Sarah shook her head.

"He wanted to burn everything down."

"And?"

"He didn't understand that people would die."

Lily's voice hardened.

"People died anyway."

"I know."

Sarah looked at Adrian.

"Thomas wanted Adrian to take the evidence to the authorities."

Adrian frowned.

"Why didn't I?"

"Because Rook intercepted you."

Sarah's voice broke.

"You were twenty-three. You had no idea how deep it went."

Adrian stared at her.

"You knew."

"I knew enough."

"You let me believe Thomas abandoned us."

"I thought keeping you alive mattered more."

"Did it?"

Sarah looked at him.

"Yes."

Adrian's face hardened.

Then Evelyn appeared at the basement stairs.

"We have a problem."

Everyone turned.

She held up her phone.

"What?"

"Someone accessed the account remotely."

Clara moved to the computer.

"No."

Evelyn nodded.

"Someone knows we're here."

Lily looked at the screen.

A new file had appeared.

It hadn't been there before.

The name was:

LILY MARSH

She clicked it.

There was only one sentence.

YOUR FATHER WAS WRONG ABOUT THE PERSON HE TRUSTED.

Then the screen went black.

A sound came from upstairs.

The front door.

Opening.

Adrian immediately moved toward Lily.

But Lily stepped back.

"Don't."

He stopped.

She looked at him.

"Not this time."

Then she picked up a flashlight.

"We go together."

Adrian nodded.

Together.

They climbed the stairs.

The house was silent.

The front door stood open.

Snow had begun falling outside.

No footprints.

No car.

No person.

Then Lily saw something on the floor.

An envelope.

Her name on it.

She picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Thomas.

Sarah.

Adrian.

And one other person.

A man Lily had never seen.

On the back, one sentence:

He was there the night your father disappeared.

Lily looked at Adrian.

"Who is he?"

Adrian stared at the photograph.

His face changed.

"I know him."

"Who?"

Adrian's voice was barely audible.

"Thomas's brother."

Lily froze.

"Your father had a brother."

"My father?"

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"Thomas."

The room seemed to tilt.

Because Thomas had always told Lily he was an only child.

He had lied.

And somewhere in the distance, a phone began to ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Sarah whispered:

"Don't answer."

But Lily already knew.

May you like

The past wasn't calling.

It was waiting.
