Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Refused to Stay Silent

For the next three days, Clara barely left her apartment.
The wedding dress remained untouched.
Still hanging by the bedroom window.
Its white fabric caught the afternoon sunlight like a reminder of the life that had almost become hers.
Every time she looked at it, she remembered Adrian's face when she had placed the engagement ring on the table.
Not angry.
Not heartbroken.
Afraid.
As if the future he had carefully planned had disappeared in a single moment.
Her phone rang constantly.
Friends.
Relatives.
Journalists.
Even wedding guests she barely knew wanted answers.
She answered none of them.
There was only one person she wanted to speak to.
The unknown woman.
Unfortunately, the number that had called her no longer existed.

Every attempt to return the call ended with the same automated message.
This number is unavailable.
It was as if the woman had vanished.
Meanwhile...
Adrian was doing everything possible to repair the damage.
Television interviews.
Social media statements.
Long emotional posts about "misunderstandings."
He claimed the recording had been edited.
Manipulated.
Taken out of context.
"I loved Clara," he told one reporter.
"I still do."
"But someone is trying to destroy our lives."
Many people believed him.
Until another recording appeared online.
This one was longer.
Much longer.
It began twenty minutes before the short clip Clara had received.
Adrian was sitting in a private restaurant with another man.
His business partner, Victor Hale.
The conversation was perfectly clear.
Victor laughed.
"So after the wedding..."
Adrian smiled.
"Half the company becomes mine immediately."
"And if she refuses?"
Adrian shrugged.
"She won't."
Victor leaned forward.
"And if she changes her mind later?"
Adrian took a sip of wine before answering.

"Then she'll already be financially trapped."
The video spread across the internet within hours.
This time...
There was no explaining it away.
The police soon became interested.
Not because Adrian had broken off a relationship.
Because financial fraud investigators recognized something else.
One detective replayed the recording three times.
Then looked toward his supervisor.
"That's not just greed."
The supervisor frowned.
"What do you hear?"
The detective pointed toward one sentence.
'The trust transfers automatically after the marriage certificate is registered.'
He slowly closed the laptop.
"I think they've done this before."
Three days later...
Detective Sarah Collins visited Clara's apartment.
"I'm sorry to bother you."
Clara invited her inside.
"Can I help you?"
Sarah placed several photographs on the coffee table.
Six women.
Different ages.
Different cities.
Different years.
"What do they have in common?"
Clara studied the pictures.
"I don't know."
"They were all engaged..."
Sarah paused.
"...to Adrian Lawson."
Clara looked up in disbelief.
"What?"
The detective nodded.
"You're not the first woman he proposed to."
Clara's breathing slowed.

"How many?"
Sarah answered quietly.
"We've confirmed six."
"And we believe there may be more."
The room became completely silent.
Clara picked up one photograph.
A smiling blonde woman.
Wedding dress.
Church steps.
Exactly like her own wedding.
"What happened to her?"
"The wedding was canceled."
"Why?"
"She discovered her investment portfolio had mysteriously disappeared."
Another photograph.
An older woman.
Successful attorney.
"What about her?"
"She married him."
Clara froze.
"And?"
Sarah hesitated.
"They divorced eighteen months later."
"She lost nearly four million dollars."
Clara slowly sat back.
"This wasn't about me."
Sarah shook her head.
"No."
"It was about your inheritance."
"And everyone else's."
At that exact moment...
Across town...
Adrian wasn't at home.
He sat inside an expensive law office.
His attorney looked increasingly nervous.
"We have a serious problem."
Adrian rubbed his temples.
"The recordings?"
"No."
The lawyer slid a folder across the desk.
"The women."
Adrian's expression changed.
"What women?"
"The police have found them."
For the first time since the wedding...
Real fear appeared on Adrian's face.

"That's impossible."
The attorney didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He opened another folder.
Inside were bank statements.
Property transfers.
Prenuptial agreements.
Every relationship Adrian had carefully hidden.
Every financial transaction.
Every suspicious divorce settlement.
The lawyer looked directly at him.
"You told me Clara was your only wealthy fiancée."
Adrian remained silent.
"You lied to me."
That evening...
Clara received another anonymous package.
No return address.
Inside was a single flash drive.
Along with one handwritten note.
You know about Adrian.
Now learn about Victor.
Her hands trembled.
She inserted the flash drive into her laptop.
The screen filled with spreadsheets.
Company registrations.
Hidden partnerships.
Offshore accounts.
One name appeared again and again.
Victor Hale Holdings.
But what caught Clara's attention wasn't Victor's name.
It was another one.

Printed beside his on nearly every document.
Margaret Lawson.
Adrian's mother.
Clara frowned.
She had always seemed kind.
Gentle.
Supportive.
She had welcomed Clara into the family with warm hugs and thoughtful gifts.
Now...
Her name appeared connected to every suspicious company.
Every financial transfer.
Every failed marriage.
Clara whispered to herself,
"It wasn't just Adrian..."
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
Again.
She answered immediately.
"Hello?"
The same woman's voice returned.
Only this time...
She sounded frightened.
"You've seen the files."
"Yes."
"You have to leave your apartment."
Clara's heart began racing.
"What?"
The woman lowered her voice.
"They know you have the evidence."
Clara stood.
"Who knows?"
Before the woman could answer...
A loud crash echoed from downstairs.
Glass shattered.
Someone had forced open the building's front entrance.
The woman whispered just four words before the call ended.
May you like
"They're coming for you."
To be continued...
