Chapter 8 - The Empire Darian Was Willing to BurnConrad’s death did not end the war.

It made it public.

By morning, three Costa businesses had been raided.

Two banks froze accounts.

A city councilman announced an investigation.

Someone leaked financial documents to the press.

Conrad had prepared for his own death.

“If he couldn’t win,” Nadia said, “he planned to poison everything.”

Darian stood at the head of the conference table.

His captains looked exhausted.

Vincent wanted retaliation.

Leo wanted evacuation plans.

The lawyers wanted silence.

Nadia wanted numbers.

“Which accounts are frozen?”

Martin answered.

He was no longer handcuffed.

Nobody trusted him.

But they needed him.

“Approximately forty percent of liquid operating capital.”

“Legitimate or criminal?”

“Both.”

“Payroll?”

“Ten days.”

Nadia looked around the table.

“What happens in eleven?”

Nobody answered.

She knew.

People stopped being loyal when salaries stopped arriving.

Darian’s empire was not collapsing because of bullets.

It was collapsing because accountants could not make payroll.

Nadia almost admired Conrad.

Almost.

“We sell the waterfront holdings,” she said.

Every man turned.

Vincent laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

Darian said nothing.

Nadia continued.

“They’re what everyone wants. Sell them.”

“To whom?” Martin asked.

“The city.”

Silence.

Vincent stared.

“You want to hand our territory to the government?”

“I want to remove the prize.”

Darian’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

“Julian wants the waterfront because controlling it gives him leverage over shipping and development. Conrad wanted it because the land value will triple after rezoning.”

Nadia stood.

“So make it useless to both of them.”

“How?”

“Sell development rights under a public-use covenant.”

Martin stared.

“Affordable housing.”

“Yes.”

Vincent nearly choked.

“You want Costa land turned into apartments?”

Nadia looked at him.

“People need somewhere to live.”

“This is a criminal organization.”

“And apparently even criminals can understand real estate.”

Darian leaned back.

A slow smile appeared.

“If the land is restricted…”

“Julian cannot use it for his operations.”

“And speculators can’t redevelop luxury towers.”

“Exactly.”

Martin shook his head.

“We lose hundreds of millions in future value.”

Nadia looked at Darian.

He understood.

“Do it.”

Vincent stood.

“Boss.”

“Sit down.”

“You cannot be serious.”

Darian’s voice became cold.

“I said sit.”

Vincent sat.

Nadia watched him.

Something had changed.

Three weeks earlier, Darian had destroyed a deal because Conrad insulted her.

That had been emotional.

This was different.

This was strategy.

He was willing to sacrifice money to end a cycle.

By afternoon, negotiations began.

Arthur Pendleton called personally.

Darian put him on speaker.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

“Possibly.”

“You sell those parcels under restriction and everyone loses.”

“Not everyone.”

“Don’t give me morality, Costa.”

Darian looked at Nadia.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Arthur’s voice weakened.

“My son will come after you.”

“He already has.”

“He’s not thinking clearly.”

“Then perhaps you should have raised him better.”

Silence.

Arthur finally said, “What do you want?”

Nadia wrote something on a legal pad.

Darian read it.

Then smiled.

“Julian.”

Arthur inhaled.

“You want me to give you my son?”

“I want you to stop protecting him.”

“He’s my child.”

Darian’s face changed.

For a moment Nadia saw the seventeen-year-old boy who had found his mother.

“I know.”

His voice softened.

“That’s why I’m asking instead of taking.”

Arthur hung up.

That evening, Nadia and Darian ate takeout on the floor of the penthouse.

Every table was covered in documents.

She opened a carton of noodles.

Darian watched her.

“What?”

“You just convinced a crime family to build affordable housing.”

“I convinced a crime family to sell land.”

“Not as romantic.”

“Reality rarely is.”

He smiled.

Nadia handed him chopsticks.

“Do you ever think about leaving?”

He stopped.

“This?”

“All of it.”

Darian looked toward the windows.

“Every day.”

She had not expected that.

“Why don’t you?”

“Because leaving isn’t simple.”

“You have money.”

“That isn’t what keeps me.”

“What does?”

“People.”

He looked at her.

“Three hundred families depend on businesses I control. Some legal. Some not. Men who did terrible things for my father. Men whose children I paid through college.”

“That sounds like an excuse.”

“It probably is.”

Nadia ate another bite.

“What would you do?”

“If I left?”

“Yes.”

Darian considered.

“I don’t know.”

“That scares you.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“The great Darian Costa is afraid of unemployment.”

“I have no transferable skills.”

“You threaten people professionally.”

“Consulting?”

Nadia laughed.

Darian stared.

“What?”

“I’ve never heard you laugh like that.”

She became self-conscious.

“Don’t make it strange.”

“Too late.”

He moved closer.

“Nadia.”

“Yes?”

“When this ends, I want something.”

Her pulse shifted.

“What?”

“A real dinner.”

“We’ve had dinner.”

“Not while discussing murder.”

“That eliminates most of our meals.”

“I mean a date.”

She stared.

Darian Costa looked almost uncomfortable.

“You’re asking me on a date?”

“Yes.”

“You brought me to a gala as a practical joke.”

“I’m aware.”

“You then hired me into organized crime.”

“Yes.”

“You locked me out of your estate.”

“A regrettable decision.”

“And now you want dinner?”

“Yes.”

Nadia pretended to consider.

“What restaurant?”

“Anywhere.”

“I choose?”

His expression became suspicious.

“Yes.”

“The diner.”

He stared.

Nadia smiled.

“You said anywhere.”

“Fine.”

“Marta will make you pay full price.”

“I can afford it.”

“And tip.”

“I always tip.”

“How much?”

“Nadia.”

She laughed again.

Darian kissed her.

This time there was no fear behind it.

Only exhaustion.

Affection.

And something dangerously close to hope.

The phone rang.

Darian ignored it.

It rang again.

Nadia pulled away.

“You should answer.”

He did.

Leo’s voice came through.

“Boss.”

Something in his tone changed the room.

“What?”

“We found Julian.”

Darian stood.

“Where?”

“Pendleton estate.”

“That’s not surprising.”

“No.”

Leo paused.

“He has Arthur.”

Darian’s face hardened.

“What do you mean?”

“Julian has taken his own father hostage.”

May you like

Nadia slowly put down her food.

The final phase had begun.
