Chapter 9 - When the King FellMeridian responded forty-eight hours later.

Not with bullets.
With the government.
At 6:04 a.m., federal agents surrounded Carter Logistics.
Cindy woke to Lucas pounding on the penthouse bedroom door.
“Boss!”
Andrew was awake instantly.
Weapon in hand.
Lucas entered.
“Feds.”
“How many?”
“Too many.”
“Office?”
“Raided.”
“Warehouses too.”
Andrew looked at Cindy.
She sat upright.
“What happened?”
Lucas threw a tablet onto the bed.
Breaking news.
Federal prosecutors had announced a sweeping investigation into Carter Logistics.
Money laundering.
Racketeering.
Smuggling.
Bribery.
Andrew’s photograph filled the screen.
Cindy’s appeared beside it.
She stared.
“They named me.”
Andrew read the headline.
His expression changed.
For the first time since Cindy had known him, he looked genuinely afraid.
Not for himself.
For her.
“Get dressed.”
“Where are we going?”
“You’re leaving.”
“No.”
“Cindy.”
“No.”
Andrew stood.
“You can still separate yourself.”
“My name is on television.”
“I can fix that.”
“How?”
“I’ll take responsibility.”
“For everything?”
“Yes.”
“You’ll go to prison.”
“Yes.”
Cindy stared at him.
“You think I’m letting you do that?”
“I think you’re going to have a life.”
“I have a life.”
She got out of bed.
“You’re in it.”
Andrew looked furious.
“This is not romantic.”
“I know.”
“You could spend twenty years in federal prison.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you arguing?”
“Because you don’t get to sacrifice yourself and call it love.”
Andrew stopped.
Cindy stepped closer.
“That is still control.”
The words landed.
He looked away.
Lucas cleared his throat.
“We have another problem.”
“What?”
“Accounts are frozen.”
“Legitimate ones too.”
Andrew swore.
“Meridian gave prosecutors the database.”
Cindy understood.
Evelyn had weaponized the truth.
Some evidence might be fabricated.
Enough of it was probably real.
Andrew’s empire was vulnerable because Meridian did not need to invent everything.
They only needed to reveal it.
Cindy opened her laptop.
“We need to know what they have.”
Andrew stared.
“Cindy.”
“You wanted me inside your world.”
“No.”
“You warned me away.”
“Fine.”
“I walked in.”
She began typing.
“Now I’m staying.”
For the next twelve hours, Carter Logistics collapsed.
Banks suspended credit.
Partners stopped answering calls.
Three captains disappeared.
Two warehouses were seized.
Employees fled.
News vans surrounded headquarters.
Andrew remained inside the penthouse.
Not hiding.
Calculating.
But Cindy saw the difference.
He had always possessed options.
Now those options were disappearing.
At 7:30 p.m., Lucas entered.
“We have maybe forty-eight hours before they issue warrants.”
Andrew nodded.
“For me?”
“And Cindy.”
Andrew closed his eyes.
Lucas continued.
“They’re offering deals to everyone.”
“Testify against Carter leadership and walk.”
Cindy looked at Andrew.
“What do you want to do?”
“Get you out of the country.”
She almost threw the laptop at him.
“Try again.”
Andrew paced toward the window.
“Cindy, I built this.”
“I made these choices.”
“You did not.”
“I optimized your smuggling routes.”
“That does not make you responsible for twenty years of my decisions.”
“No.”
She stood.
“But I’m responsible for mine.”
Andrew turned.
“I’m not running.”
“Then what?”
“We find Evelyn.”
Lucas laughed without humor.
“With what army?”
Cindy looked at the frozen accounts.
The abandoned operations.
The people fleeing Andrew.
“We don’t need an army.”
“What do we need?”
“Proof.”
She opened Meridian’s partial database.
The one she stole before the warehouse exploded.
“If Meridian has spent years manipulating criminal organizations, they have manipulated law enforcement too.”
Lucas leaned closer.
Cindy continued.
“They don’t survive by keeping information.”
“They survive by controlling who receives it.”
“Which means there will be records.”
“Payments.”
“Contacts.”
“Instructions.”
Andrew understood.
“If we expose Meridian…”
“The federal case becomes contaminated.”
Cindy nodded.
“Not erased.”
“We’re not innocent.”
“But prosecutors will have to separate legitimate evidence from Meridian manipulation.”
Lucas whistled.
“That buys time.”
“And leverage.”
Andrew looked at Cindy.
“You have a plan.”
“Yes.”
He waited.
Cindy smiled.
“You’re going to hate it.”
“I already do.”
They contacted Evelyn.
Not directly.
Through Vincent.
Andrew’s uncle had lost everything.
Money.
Crews.
Protection.
Status.
Which made him useful.
Cindy visited him alone.
Andrew nearly destroyed the penthouse when she insisted.
But he allowed it.
That mattered.
Vincent looked twenty years older.
“You came without him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Andrew would enjoy this too much.”
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“What do you want?”
“Evelyn.”
“I can’t give her to you.”
“You can.”
“She abandoned me.”
“Then you have even less reason to protect her.”
Vincent looked at Cindy.
“You really love him.”
“Yes.”
“He will ruin you.”
“Maybe.”
Cindy sat opposite him.
“But he never lied about what he was.”
Vincent looked away.
Cindy continued.
“You did.”
That landed.
“Help me.”
“Why?”
“Because Meridian used you too.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
“They promised stability.”
“They promised you Andrew’s empire.”
“No.”
“They promised you the illusion that you could control it.”
Cindy leaned forward.
“You taught Andrew that power means never having anything to lose.”
“Look at you now.”
“You lost everything because you believed them.”
Vincent remained silent for a long time.
Then he gave her an address.
Evelyn Shaw owned a private residence in Connecticut under another name.
Cindy returned to the penthouse.
Andrew waited beside the elevator.
“You went alone.”
“Yes.”
“I hated every second.”
“I know.”
“You could have been killed.”
“I wasn’t.”
“That is a terrible argument.”
“It’s one of yours.”
Andrew stared.
Then pulled her into his arms.
No anger.
Just relief.
Cindy whispered against his chest.
“I found Evelyn.”
They did not attack.
That would have proven Meridian’s story.
Instead, Cindy made a different choice.
She sent the address to federal investigators anonymously.
Along with the copied Meridian files.
Then they waited.
At 3:12 the following morning, Evelyn called.
Screaming.
“You stupid little bitch.”
Cindy put the call on speaker.
Andrew smiled.
“You sound stressed.”
Evelyn ignored him.
“You gave them my location.”
“You gave them ours first.”
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“I think I do.”
Cindy sat at the kitchen counter.
“You built your power by keeping everybody separated.”
“Criminals.”
“Police.”
“Corporations.”
“Politicians.”
“You knew everyone’s secrets.”
“So nobody could compare notes.”
Evelyn breathed heavily.
Cindy continued.
“I changed that.”
“What did you send?”
“Enough.”
“You’ll destroy Carter too.”
Cindy looked at Andrew.
“I know.”
He stared back.
That was the part he had not expected.
Cindy had released everything.
Including records damaging to Carter Logistics.
She had not saved Andrew by hiding his crimes.
She had forced everyone into the same light.
Andrew finally understood her plan.
“You released our files too.”
“Yes.”
Lucas went silent.
Evelyn laughed.
“You idiot.”
“You just destroyed the man you love.”
Cindy’s eyes filled.
“No.”
“I gave him a choice.”
She looked at Andrew.
“For the first time in his life, a real one.”
The line disconnected.
Andrew did not speak.
Cindy’s hands began shaking.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For releasing the Carter files.”
“You could go to prison.”
“Yes.”
“You could lose everything.”
“Yes.”
“Why aren’t you angry?”
Andrew walked toward her.
He took her face between his hands.
“Because you were right.”
Cindy blinked.
“About what?”
“I built an empire so I would never feel powerless.”
His voice became quiet.
“Then I spent my life serving it.”
“Protecting it.”
“Killing for it.”
“Becoming exactly what it required.”
He looked toward the city.
“I thought I owned Carter Logistics.”
“I didn’t.”
“It owned me.”
Cindy covered his hands.
“And now?”
“Now?”
Andrew smiled sadly.
“Now we find out who I am without it.”
Federal agents arrested Evelyn Shaw two days later.
The Meridian investigation expanded internationally.
Politicians resigned.
Port officials were arrested.
Corporate executives disappeared from boardrooms.
Cases across multiple jurisdictions reopened.
The Carter investigation did not vanish.
Andrew surrendered voluntarily.
So did Cindy.
Lucas refused.
He arrived at the federal building anyway.
“I’m not letting you idiots go to jail without supervision.”
For the first time in years, Andrew Carter entered a building without a weapon.
Cindy walked beside him.
Reporters screamed questions.
Cameras flashed.
Andrew stopped before the doors.
He looked at Cindy.
“You can still walk away.”
She smiled.
“You really need a new sentence.”
May you like
Then she took his hand.
Together, they entered.
