Not because she doubted he was hers.
Because every institution around them had already been touched by Robert, Evelyn, or Pierce.
Rachel arranged an independent laboratory with no connection to New Beginnings. A technician came directly to the hospital and collected samples from Clara, Daniel, and Noah under recorded supervision.
Results would take twenty-four hours.
Clara stared at Noah’s face.
“He has your chin.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“He has your mouth.”
The baby slept, unaware that adults were turning his identity into evidence.
Rachel examined the DNA report Robert filed.
The laboratory existed.
Its accreditation was valid.
But the sample dates were impossible.
Noah’s sample had supposedly been collected two days before his birth.
Daniel pointed.
“They prepared this before he existed.”
“Or they had another infant’s sample,” Rachel said.
The petition claimed a hospital substitution occurred because Clara delivered a female baby who died shortly after birth. Noah was allegedly brought from an unregistered private maternity program.
Clara went pale.
“I heard him cry after delivery.”
Daniel remembered the emergency room.
Doctors moved quickly.
Clara hemorrhaged and lost consciousness.
A nurse carried a baby past him, but he saw only part of the blanket before being ordered outside.
He first held Noah forty minutes later.
Clara first saw him after surgery.
There had been a window.
But the hospital bracelet, footprints, and records matched.
Unless records were altered.
Rachel requested the delivery-room logs.
Several entries had been modified after the birth.
The user account belonged to Nurse Melissa Dane.
Melissa had disappeared from work the following morning.
Her address was empty.
Her phone disconnected.
The hospital began an internal investigation.
Daniel searched photographs from the delivery.
In the first image, Noah wore a blue-and-white striped cap.
In a later image, he wore a solid blue cap.
Clothing changes were common.
Still, Clara noticed something.
“The first baby had a darker patch near his ear.”
Noah did not.
Daniel enlarged the image.
A tiny crescent-shaped birthmark appeared below the newborn’s left ear.
Noah’s skin was clear.
Clara began shaking.
“That was my baby.”
Daniel held her.
“We don’t know.”
“I know what I saw.”
“What if the image lighting—”
“Do not explain it away.”
He stopped.
Clara looked at Noah and immediately hated herself for the fear appearing in her eyes.
The child had done nothing.
Whether born to her or placed beside her, he remained a newborn needing safety.
She picked him up.
“You’re still Noah.”
The independent DNA results arrived the next morning.
Clara was not genetically related to him.
Daniel was.
The room became silent.
Noah was Daniel’s biological son but not Clara’s.
That contradicted Robert’s report claiming no relationship to either parent.
It also meant an embryo, infant, or maternity substitution involved Daniel’s genetics.
Clara’s voice trembled.
“How can he be yours?”
Daniel looked horrified.
“I have never been with anyone else.”
Rachel considered fertility records.
Before marriage, Daniel and Clara underwent testing after a year of difficulty conceiving. Daniel provided a sample at a clinic recommended by Evelyn.
The clinic was owned by New Beginnings Medical Group.
Robert or Pierce could have used Daniel’s genetic material.
Clara’s pregnancy had been achieved naturally months later—or so they believed.
Her prenatal scans showed a male fetus.
She delivered a male baby.
Yet Noah was not genetically hers.
The birthmark suggested the baby she delivered might have been removed.
The most likely explanation was an infant exchange.
Another woman had carried Daniel’s biological child.
Clara’s biological baby had been taken.
She could barely breathe.
“Where is my son?”
Daniel sat beside her.
“Noah is our son.”
“My other son.”
The words broke them both.
Rachel searched hospital records for another male birth near the same time.
One infant was born twenty-eight minutes before Clara’s delivery to a patient using the name Laura Miles.
The mother left against medical advice.
Her address was false.
The baby’s record was sealed through a private adoption order filed by Edmund Pierce.
New Beginnings had arranged the birth.
Daniel’s sample may have been used to create the pregnancy.
The babies were then exchanged.
But why give Daniel his biological child while taking Clara’s?
Robert’s trust explained one motive.
Noah had to be Daniel’s biological son to qualify as the male heir.
Clara’s baby carried no Carter genetics and therefore threatened the plan.
Evelyn and Robert wanted the heir placed directly into Daniel’s home while making Clara appear unstable enough to remove later.
Clara touched Noah’s cheek.
“They created him for the trust.”
Rachel’s expression tightened.
“Possibly.”
Noah was both child and instrument.
Just as Clara’s missing baby had become disposable to them.
Daniel called Robert.
No answer.
Evelyn’s phone went directly to voicemail.
Then Clara’s missing smartphone activated remotely.
A live video appeared.
Evelyn stood inside a nursery Daniel did not recognize.
She held a newborn wearing a blue-and-white striped cap.
Beneath the baby’s left ear was a crescent-shaped birthmark.
Clara screamed.
Evelyn looked toward the camera.
