Chapter 3 - Then at me.

His hesitation lasted maybe two seconds.

It was enough.

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

I turned toward the elevator.

Ryan grabbed the suitcase handle.

Not me.

The suitcase.

As if stopping an object could stop the choice behind it.

Damian moved then.

He did not touch Ryan.

He only said his name.

“Ryan.”

My husband looked at him.

Damian’s voice was calm.

“She said she’s leaving.”

Ryan released the suitcase.

For the first time since I had known him, he seemed unable to decide which version of himself would work.

Angry husband.

Concerned father.

Innocent man.

Victim of an interfering brother.

He cycled through all of them and settled on wounded.

“You’re really going to destroy our family over one conversation?”

I looked down at Eli.

“No.”

Then I met Ryan’s eyes.

“You did that before I ever heard it.”

The elevator doors started to close.

Ryan stepped forward.

“Clare.”

I pressed the button to hold them.

He looked almost desperate now.

“Please don’t do something you’ll regret.”

I thought about fourteen hours of labor.

I thought about Vanessa’s voice.

I thought about Ryan saying the words real family.

Then I thought about the hotel room twelve minutes away while I slept alone at seven months pregnant.

“I already did.”

His brow furrowed.

“I married someone who thought my trust made me weak.”

Then I let the elevator doors close.

My knees almost gave out before we reached the lobby.

Damian noticed.

“Give me the suitcase.”

“I can carry it.”

“I know.”

He took it anyway.

Not because he thought I could not.

Because I did not need to.

That difference nearly broke me.

We reached the underground garage without speaking.

A black SUV waited near the elevators.

The second the door closed behind me, Eli woke and began crying.

I tried to soothe him.

My hands started shaking.

Not slightly.

Violently.

The adrenaline was leaving my body, and everything I had refused to feel in the hallway crashed into me at once.

Damian sat across from me.

He did not reach for me.

He did not say anything.

He simply waited.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

His expression changed.

“For what?”

“For disappearing.”

My voice cracked.

“For not listening.”

“Clare.”

“I defended him.”

“I know.”

“I stopped calling you.”

“I know.”

“I made you the problem because it was easier than admitting something was wrong.”

Damian looked out the window for a moment.

When he looked back, there was anger in his eyes.

But none of it was directed at me.

“I could have pushed harder.”

“He would have used that against you.”

“I know.”

I swallowed.

“He already did.”

Damian nodded slowly.

Then he leaned back.

“You called tonight.”

I looked at him.

“That’s what matters now.”

My phone started ringing.

Ryan.

I watched his name fill the screen.

The call ended.

Then began again.

Then again.

Damian glanced at the phone.

“Do you want me to take it?”

“No.”

I declined the call myself.

A text arrived immediately.

We need to talk.

Then another.

You cannot just leave with Eli.

Then another.

Your brother is manipulating you.

I stared at the screen.

Even now, Ryan needed my choice to belong to another man.

My brother.

Hormones.

Exhaustion.

Anyone except me.

I switched the phone to silent.

Damian had arranged for me to stay in the guest suite at his apartment.

He lived twenty minutes away.

I had been there dozens of times before marrying Ryan.

The moment we entered, I smelled coffee and cedar and the faint lemon cleaner Damian’s housekeeper had used for years.

It was so familiar that I nearly cried again.

The guest room had been prepared quickly.

Fresh sheets.

A bassinet borrowed from one of Damian’s friends.

Diapers.

Bottles.

Formula.

A small night-light.

I stared at everything.

“You did all this in forty minutes?”

“I made calls.”

A humorless laugh escaped me.

“You always did like making calls.”

For the first time, Damian smiled.

Then his expression softened.

“There’s someone downstairs you should speak with tomorrow if you’re ready.”

“The attorney?”

“Adrian.”

I recognized the name.

Adrian Keller had handled legal work for our family for more than a decade.

Ryan knew him too.

That explained part of the fear in the hallway.

“And the other man?”

“Security consultant.”

My eyebrows rose.

Damian lifted a hand.

“Before you get angry, I didn’t know what I was walking into.”

“He’s never hit me.”

“I believe you.”

Damian paused.

“But you called me after a year of silence and said you needed to get out tonight.”

I looked away.

When he put it that way, I understood.

“I don’t want you destroying Ryan.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“I didn’t say anything about destroying him.”

“You thought it.”

“I’ve thought worse.”

Despite everything, I laughed.

It came out strangely.

Half laugh.

Half sob.

Damian’s face softened.

I wiped my eyes.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

He leaned forward.

“You tell Adrian what you want.”

“Not me.”

“Not Ryan.”

“You.”

I looked toward the bassinet.

Eli had fallen asleep again.

“What if I don’t know?”

“Then figure it out before anyone pressures you into deciding.”

Those words stayed with me all night.

Ryan called seventeen times.

I answered none of them.

At three in the morning, while feeding Eli beside the guest room window, I read the messages.

Please come home.

You’re overreacting.

Vanessa is not what you think.

I love you.

Damian has always hated me.

Think about Eli.

We can fix this.

You’re making a huge mistake.

The contradiction almost fascinated me.

Ryan was sorry.

Except nothing happened.

I was wrong.

Except we could fix it.

Vanessa meant nothing.

Except she was his real family.

I looked at Eli.

His eyes were barely open.

His fingers curled around mine.

For years, I had thought strength would feel like certainty.

It did not.

It felt like being terrified and refusing to walk backward anyway.

The next morning, I met Adrian Keller at Damian’s dining table.

He did not speak to me like I was fragile.

I appreciated that immediately.

He asked what I wanted.

I told him the truth.

“I want to leave my marriage.”

He nodded once.

“Anything else?”

“I want Eli safe.”

“Good.”

“I don’t want revenge.”

Adrian glanced at Damian.

Damian looked offended.

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You haven’t needed to.”

I almost smiled.

Then I looked back at Adrian.

“I want whatever is fair.”

“I want access to my money.”

“I want a parenting arrangement that is actually about Eli.”

“And I don’t want Ryan using finances to force me back.”

Adrian took notes.

Then he asked what documentation I had.

I opened my folder.

Bank statements.

Tax records.

Mortgage documents.

Account numbers.

Insurance information.

Screenshots.

Hotel receipts.

Adrian looked through them slowly.

When he finally looked up, something like approval crossed his face.

“You did this yourself?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“While Ryan thought I was too tired to notice anything.”

Damian looked at me differently after that.

Not protectively.

Proudly.

It was a small thing.

I had forgotten how much I missed being looked at like I was capable.

Adrian explained the next steps without dramatics.

Communication through counsel where necessary.

Temporary parenting arrangements.

Financial disclosures.

No threats.

No games.

No disappearing.

That was exactly what I wanted.

May you like

Before he left, he asked one more question.

“Are you afraid of Ryan?”
