Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The music box was gone by 6:15 the next morning.

Rodrigo discovered it himself.

The envelope, photographs, USB drive, hospital bracelet—everything had vanished.

There was no sign of forced entry.

Only 6 people had access to the mansion.

Rodrigo.

Elena.

Mrs. Herrera.

Mateo.

The cook.

And Rodrigo’s younger brother, Sebastián, who still possessed a family key.

Rodrigo ordered the gates locked.

Elena found him in the security room reviewing footage.

“Someone deleted 4 hours.”

Rodrigo did not turn.

“Professionally?”

“Yes.”

“That means it wasn’t a maid.”

He finally looked at her.

“You’re learning.”

“I watch crime shows.”

“This isn’t television.”

“No. On television, rich men usually have better security.”

He gave her a look.

She crossed her arms.

“Too soon?”

“Considerably.”

The argument was interrupted when Elena’s phone rang.

Carmen.

Elena answered immediately.

“Grandma?”

Only breathing came through.

Then a crash.

“Grandma?”

“Elena…”

Carmen sounded terrified.

“Someone was here.”

Elena’s face changed.

Rodrigo was already reaching for his keys.

They reached Carmen’s apartment 18 minutes later.

The front door had been forced open.

Drawers had been emptied.

Photographs covered the floor.

Carmen sat in a chair clutching her oxygen tube.

Elena dropped beside her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Carmen looked past her.

At Rodrigo.

The old woman’s face went white.

“You.”

Rodrigo stopped.

“You know me?”

“I know whose son-in-law you are.”

Elena turned.

“Grandma, what is happening?”

Carmen closed her eyes.

For 27 years, she had kept a secret.

For 3 years, she had kept another.

Now both had found her.

“Lock the door.”

Rodrigo did.

Carmen pointed toward an old sewing machine.

“Bottom panel.”

Elena removed a hidden compartment.

Inside was a thick envelope wrapped in plastic.

Carmen looked at Rodrigo.

“Your wife gave that to me.”

Rodrigo’s hands tightened.

“When?”

“Three weeks before she died.”

“Why?”

“Because she was afraid.”

Carmen explained.

Camila had discovered financial transfers inside Cárdenas Infrastructure—payments routed through shell companies connected to construction contracts, government officials, and a private security firm.

Someone was stealing hundreds of millions.

Camila had secretly begun collecting evidence.

Then she discovered something worse.

The corruption reached inside Rodrigo’s family.

“She wouldn’t tell me who,” Carmen said. “She said she needed proof first.”

Rodrigo opened the envelope.

Copies of invoices.

Names.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

One photograph showed Sebastián meeting with Victor Luján, Rodrigo’s former chief financial officer.

Rodrigo stared.

“My brother.”

Carmen shook her head.

“Don’t decide too quickly. Camila warned me about that.”

Elena sat beside her.

“What about the hospital bracelet?”

Carmen’s expression changed.

“What bracelet?”

“Elena Valdés.”

Carmen’s lips parted.

The room went silent.

“Grandma?”

Tears filled Carmen’s eyes.

“Oh, Elena.”

Elena stood.

“No. Whatever you’re about to say, don’t look at me like that.”

Carmen reached for her.

Elena stepped backward.

“Tell me.”

Carmen’s voice broke.

“Your mother wasn’t my daughter.”

Elena stared at her.

“What?”

“You were brought to me when you were 2 days old.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“By Isabel Valdés.”

Rodrigo felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Isabel.

Camila’s mother.

“Elena,” Carmen continued, “your biological mother was Isabel’s youngest sister, Lucía.”

Elena whispered, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Lucía died giving birth to you.”

Carmen began crying.

“And your father was a married man from a powerful family. Isabel was terrified he would take you.”

“Who?”

Carmen looked toward Rodrigo.

That was when a bullet shattered the window.

Rodrigo threw himself over Elena.

Glass exploded across the room.

“DOWN!”

A second shot struck the wall.

Rodrigo dragged Elena behind the kitchen counter.

Carmen screamed.

Outside, tires shrieked.

Then silence.

Rodrigo grabbed his phone.

“Mateo! Carmen’s apartment. Now!”

Elena crawled toward her grandmother.

Blood covered Carmen’s sleeve.

“Grandma!”

“It’s glass,” Carmen gasped. “I’m okay.”

Elena pressed a towel against the cut.

Rodrigo looked through the broken window.

Whoever had fired was gone.

But the message was clear.

Stop digging.

At the hospital, Carmen refused to continue talking until Elena was safe.

Rodrigo arranged a private room and 2 guards.

Near midnight, Elena stood alone in the corridor.

Rodrigo approached.

“You should sleep.”

She laughed bitterly.

“I discovered I’m not who I thought I was, someone shot at us, and my grandmother has been lying to me since birth.”

He stood beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that.”

“What would you prefer?”

“I don’t know.”

She covered her face.

For several seconds, she fought tears.

Then Rodrigo gently pulled her hands away.

“You’re still Elena.”

She looked up.

“You don’t even know me.”

“I know you covered a sleeping stranger with a blanket when you thought no one was watching.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know you refused to steal when you desperately needed money. I know you defended your grandmother even when doing it could cost you your job.”

His voice lowered.

“A name doesn’t decide who you are.”

Elena’s tears finally fell.

Rodrigo wiped one away with his thumb.

Neither noticed how close they had become.

Then Carmen’s doctor emerged.

“Elena?”

She turned.

“Your grandmother is asking for you.”

Inside the room, Carmen took Elena’s hand.

“There’s something else.”

Elena sat down.

“Who is my father?”

Carmen looked toward Rodrigo standing in the doorway.

Then she whispered the name.

“Esteban Cárdenas.”

Rodrigo went pale.

Elena stared at him.

“Who is Esteban?”

May you like

Rodrigo’s answer came barely above a whisper.

“My father.”
