Chapter 8 - The AppointmentAt 10:57 the next morning, Harper Costello walked into the Madison Avenue obstetric clinic wearing a cream coat and carrying no visible weapon.

Every photographer across the street noticed her.
That was deliberate.
The Costello organization leaked news of the appointment six hours earlier.
Also deliberate.
What almost nobody knew was that Doctor Alvarez had been replaced by a federal trauma surgeon wearing prosthetic makeup, three nurses were actually Costello security operatives, and every room except one had been evacuated.
Harper sat in the examination room.
Adrian stood behind the one-way glass in the adjacent office.
He hated every second.
Leo had confiscated Adrian’s phone after the fifth time he attempted to cancel the operation.
“You realize I can fire you,” Adrian said.
Leo kept watching the monitors.
“You say that every month.”
“This time I mean it.”
“You mean it every month.”
On screen, Harper looked completely calm.
That irritated Adrian more.
She was four months pregnant and being used as bait.
He understood intellectually that it had been her idea.
Emotionally, he wanted to demolish the entire city until Julian Mercer appeared.
At 11:06, the clinic elevator opened.
A delivery man stepped out carrying flowers.
Security scanned him.
Clean.
At 11:09, an elderly patient exited the elevator.
Verified.
At 11:13, the fire alarm activated.
Leo immediately leaned forward.
“There.”
Smoke appeared near the service corridor.
False alarm.
Adrian reached for the door.
Leo blocked him.
“Wait.”
“No.”
“This is what we expected.”
“Move.”
“Boss.”
Then the monitors died.
Every screen went black.
Adrian shoved past Leo.
“Harper!”
Inside the examination room, the lights flickered.
Harper stood immediately.
The fake doctor reached beneath his coat.
Someone knocked.
Three times.
Harper’s blood ran cold.
The door opened.
Julian Mercer stepped inside.
Alone.
Harper stared at him.
He looked exactly as he always had.
Warm brown eyes.
Perfectly groomed silver hair.
A man who had spent decades solving Adrian’s legal problems.
“Harper.”
She forced herself not to reach for the weapon strapped beneath the examination table.
“Julian.”
The fake doctor raised his gun.
Julian smiled.
“If I intended to shoot her, doctor, you’d already be dead.”
Harper said, “That’s comforting.”
Julian glanced toward her stomach.
“You look well.”
“Don’t.”
His gaze returned to her face.
“I never wanted this part.”
“You stole my ultrasound.”
“I copied it.”
“Oh, excellent distinction.”
Julian sighed.
“You sound like Adrian.”
“Marriage.”
Outside, boots pounded through the corridor.
Julian remained calm.
He placed a small electronic device on the counter.
“Signal jammer.”
Harper looked at him.
“They’ll be inside in thirty seconds.”
“Twenty.”
“Then talk.”
Julian’s expression changed.
“I’m not Shepherd.”
Harper blinked.
“You want to try that again?”
“I worked for Shepherd.”
“Who is Shepherd?”
“I don’t know.”
“Convenient.”
“He recruited me twenty-three years ago.”
“Why?”
“Because Vincent Costello killed my brother.”
Harper said nothing.
Julian continued.
“My brother worked for Samuel Vale. After the kidnapping attempt, Vincent executed everyone involved.”
“So this is revenge.”
“It began that way.”
“Began?”
Julian looked toward the door.
“Black Harbor changed.”
Harper studied him.
“You’re afraid.”
“Yes.”
That surprised her more than denial would have.
“Of Voss?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Julian leaned closer.
“Evelyn.”
Harper froze.
“My sister-in-law?”
Julian almost smiled.
“If that helps you process it.”
“You’re saying Evelyn runs Black Harbor?”
“I’m saying Conrad Voss is not the person you should fear.”
A crash sounded in the corridor.
Adrian.
Julian spoke faster.
“Evelyn wants the Harbor Ledger. Voss wants it destroyed.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn wants to use it.”
“For leverage?”
“For control.”
The door shook under a heavy impact.
Harper said, “Why tell me?”
“Because I believed I was helping dismantle Vincent’s empire. Then I learned Evelyn intends to replace it with something larger.”
Another impact.
The frame cracked.
Julian reached into his jacket.
The fake doctor raised his pistol.
Harper grabbed his arm.
“Wait.”
Julian withdrew not a gun but a flash drive.
He put it in Harper’s hand.
“This contains every communication I saved.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
The door burst open.
Adrian entered with Leo and two guards.
His weapon pointed directly at Julian’s face.
“Step away from my wife.”
Julian did.
Adrian crossed the room and drove him into the wall.
“Adrian!”
Harper grabbed his arm.
Julian laughed weakly.
“Still emotional.”
Adrian hit him.
Hard.
Blood spilled from Julian’s mouth.
“Stop!”
Harper wedged herself between them.
Adrian stared at her as if she had lost her mind.
“He has information.”
“He threatened our child.”
“He says he didn’t.”
“And you believe him?”
“No.”
Julian wiped blood from his lip.
“You should kill me.”
Adrian looked ready to oblige.
“But if you do,” Julian continued, “you’ll never find Elena.”
Adrian stopped.
Harper felt his body become rigid.
“My mother.”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
Julian smiled sadly.
“Evelyn moved her yesterday.”
Adrian grabbed his throat.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong answer.”
“I don’t!”
Harper watched Julian’s face.
He was telling the truth.
Or believed he was.
“Who does?” she asked.
Julian looked at her.
“Voss.”
Adrian released him.
Julian slid down the wall.
Leo cuffed his wrists.
Harper looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on this?”
“Enough to find him.”
“Voss?”
“Yes.”
Julian looked toward Adrian.
“And enough to prove something else.”
“What?”
Julian’s expression was almost pitying.
“Vincent knew Shepherd existed.”
Adrian’s face darkened.
“How long?”
“Years.”
“And he never told me.”
“No.”
Harper looked at the flash drive.
“Why?”
Julian gave a short laugh.
“Ask your father why he enjoys sacrificing people he claims to love.”
Adrian almost hit him again.
Harper stopped him with one look.
Twenty minutes later, Julian was transported to a secure Costello property.
They returned to Tribeca.
Leo isolated the flash drive from the network before opening it.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Messages.
Bank accounts.
Surveillance photographs.
Black Harbor operations.
Harper searched Evelyn.
Three hundred and fourteen references.
Adrian searched Elena.
One file.
Password protected.
“What’s the password?” Leo asked.
Harper looked through Julian’s notes.
A single phrase appeared beside the encrypted directory.
ICE CUBES.
Adrian stared at her.
“No.”
Harper typed it.
The file opened.
She smiled.
“Never underestimate a memorable first date.”
“It was not a date.”
“You tipped me three thousand dollars.”
“That was appreciation.”
“You threatened the sommelier.”
“Romance is subjective.”
Leo groaned.
The file contained one video.
Recorded three days earlier.
A woman appeared.
Late sixties.
Elegant.
Silver streaks in dark hair.
Gray eyes.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Elena Costello.
His mother.
Alive.
She looked directly at the camera.
“Adrian, if you are seeing this, Julian has finally chosen a side.”
Adrian sat down.
Harper took his hand.
Elena continued.
“I have spent sixteen years wanting to come home.”
Adrian’s jaw clenched.
“But wanting something and surviving it are not the same.”
She looked older than photographs Harper had seen, but unmistakably beautiful.
“I left because your father believed the Harbor Ledger would protect us. He was wrong. Secrets like these do not protect families. They poison them.”
Elena paused.
“Evelyn wants the ledger because she believes corrupt people can be controlled through exposure. Voss wants it destroyed because he believes the truth would destabilize too many governments.”
Harper whispered, “And you?”
Elena answered from the recording as though she had heard.
“I believe the ledger should never have existed.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Where are you?”
The recording continued.
“There is one copy left.”
Elena looked directly into the lens.
“It is not with me.”
Harper and Adrian exchanged glances.
“I placed it where Vincent would never search and Black Harbor would never understand.”
She smiled faintly.
“With someone who did not know what she was carrying.”
Harper’s pulse changed.
Elena continued.
“Claire.”
Harper stood.
“My mother?”
Adrian looked at her.
The video ended.
Harper immediately called Claire.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Leo checked the security feed from Claire’s apartment.
Empty.
One guard unconscious.
Another missing.
Adrian stood.
“Find her.”
Harper’s phone buzzed.
A message.
This time, not from an unknown number.
From her mother.
A photograph appeared.
Claire sat inside a car.
Beside her was Vincent.
She looked annoyed but unharmed.
Below it was a message.
Harper, I’m safe. Do not trust Evelyn.
A second message arrived.
This one contained only an address.
An old house near the Hudson River.
Adrian looked at Harper.
“You’re staying here.”
She laughed.
May you like
“No.”
“I had to try.”
