Chapter 5

I forced myself to breathe slowly and think through the remnants of the sedative.

Fear still climbed my spine and tightened my throat.

A metal door opened.

A tall, gray-haired man entered. A deep scar extended from his left eye toward his jaw.

He examined me as though I were merchandise.

“Finally awake. I thought my men had given you too much.”

“Who are you? What do you want?”

My voice emerged hoarse.

“Marco Castellano. You are the leverage I will use to destroy Nico Rossi.”

My stomach dropped.

“Nico will kill you.”

“If he finds this location.”

Marco crouched close enough for me to smell cigarettes.

“Even if he does, it may be too late. I will use you to lure him into mistakes and destroy everything he built.”

His finger passed coldly over my cheek.

“When I finish with him, perhaps I’ll keep you as compensation.”

I spat into his face.

He froze in surprise.

Then he struck me hard enough to turn my head and fill my mouth with the taste of blood.

“Brave.”

He wiped his face with a handkerchief.

“I see why Nico became interested. That courage will disappear. It always does.”

He left me alone again with my cheek burning and my heart moving violently from fear.

Across the city, Nico’s office had become the center of a war operation.

Maps covered the desk. Computers displayed security footage. Telephones rang continuously as informants reported every possible detail.

Rocco had never seen Nico in that condition.

Ordinarily, he remained controlled and calculated, planning 10 moves before taking 1. Now something primitive and uncontrolled lived in his eyes, and even his most loyal men kept their distance.

“Nothing?” Nico asked for the 10th time within 5 minutes.

“We are tracing every black van registered in the area, reviewing traffic cameras, and pressing every street contact.”

“It isn’t enough.”

Nico struck the desk so hard that a computer shifted.

“She is alone. She’s frightened and possibly injured, and I don’t know where she is.”

“We will find her.”

“I will burn the city.”

It was not an empty threat.

“Every building, hideout, and place where they might hold her will be opened.”

A telephone rang from an unknown number.

Nico answered and placed the call on speaker.

“Who is this?”

“Hello, Nico.”

Marco’s voice carried satisfaction.

“Have you lost something? Or someone?”

Everyone in the office became still.

“Marco.”

Nico pronounced the name with controlled hatred.

“If you touched her—”

“I already have. She’s here, tied and frightened, although she continues attempting to be brave. You have excellent taste. It’s unfortunate she may soon be too damaged to remain interesting.”

Nico’s hand tightened around the phone until its screen cracked.

“What do you want?”

“Your surrender. Your territories, contacts, and everything you control. In return, I may return the girl without dividing her into pieces.”

“Where is she?”

“I’m somewhere you will not find in time. I’ll care for her while you decide whether pride is worth more than your girlfriend’s life.”

The call ended.

3 seconds of complete silence followed.

Then another phone rang.

1 of Nico’s men answered, listened, and turned urgently.

“We traced the signal. An informant also saw the van. There is an abandoned warehouse near the port, registered to a shell company connected in older records to Castellano.”

Nico was already moving toward the door and retrieving a weapon from beneath the desk.

“How many men are available?”

“20, armed and ready.”

“Mobilize all of them.”

Rocco followed.

“What if it is a trap?”

Nico stopped and turned.

“Then it is a trap. I’m entering anyway. She is there, Rocco. I would rather die bringing her out than live knowing I did not try.”

While Nico prepared his men, a technician reviewing telephone records discovered a connection.

2 days before my abduction, a number registered to Valentina Rossi had called a number belonging to Marco Castellano.

The call lasted 8 minutes.

The technician brought the information to Rocco.

Rocco examined it 3 times before nausea rose in him.

“My God.”

He ran outside, where Nico was preparing to leave.

“You need to see this.”

Nico read the names and numbers.

His expression did not change, but Rocco saw something die within his eyes.

“Valentina.”

His voice was hollow.

“My son’s mother betrayed me again.”

“Boss—”

“Later. First Luna. Then I deal with Valentina.”

The rescue was fast, brutal, and efficient.

Nico’s men entered the warehouse with military precision. Gunfire, shouting, breaking bone, and falling bodies filled the building.

Marco attempted to use me as a shield, pressing a gun to my head.

Nico did not hesitate.

1 shot struck Marco with fatal precision.

He fell with his eyes still open in surprise.

Then Nico reached me.

He cut the ropes from my wrists and pulled me into his arms with something approaching desperation.

“Look at me. Are you hurt? What did they do?”

“I’m all right.”

My body shook violently.

“I’m all right now.”

He carried me from the warehouse and initially refused to release me even when the paramedics attempted to conduct an examination.

Only at the hospital, when doctors insisted, did he finally allow them to take me.

I woke in a private hospital room with soft morning light entering through the curtains.

Nico sat beside the bed holding my hand. His eyes were red from a sleepless night.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hi.”

He lifted my hand and kissed it.

“How do you feel?”

“Sore. Frightened. Alive.”

“Never again.”

His voice carried a promise that sounded almost like a threat.

“No one will touch you again. You will never be left without protection.”

“Nico.”

The words caught in my throat.

“Valentina did this, didn’t she?”

He closed his eyes. Pain crossed his face.

“Yes. She gave Marco your schedule and told him when you would be vulnerable. She did it because she could not accept that I moved forward and chose you.”

“Where is she?”

“In custody for complicity in kidnapping. When I finish testifying, she will be imprisoned for a long time.”

Before the matter could settle, Nico had 1 final confrontation.

Valentina sat in an interrogation room wearing the expensive dress she had been arrested in. Her makeup was smeared and her eyes were swollen from crying.

She rose when Nico entered.

“Please. You have to understand.”

“You touched her.”

His voice was so cold that she stepped backward.

“You used our son. You conspired with my greatest enemy.”

“I loved you.”

Valentina screamed, tears moving down her face.

“I still love you. She does not deserve you or understand you as I do. She does not share our history.”

“And I love her.”

Every word was firm.

“Not you. Never you again. That is the difference.”

“You chose me once. You married me, had a child with me, and built a life.”

“You destroyed that life when you cheated.”

Nico’s expression remained fixed.

“Now you live with the consequences. You are nothing to me except Liam’s mother. When this is over and you are eventually released, I never want to see you again.”

He turned toward the door.

“Nico, please.”

He did not stop or look back.

The door closed behind him with absolute finality.

3 days later, while I remained in the hospital, Liam came to visit.

He entered hesitantly, appearing smaller than before, with his shoulders bent beneath everything that had happened.

“I didn’t know about my mother’s plan,” he said. “You have to believe me.”

I looked at the man I had once believed I loved and felt only emptiness.

“I believe you. It no longer matters.”

Tears gathered in his eyes.

“She’s in jail because of you and me.”

“Because of herself. Because of her decisions.”

He stood for another moment before leaving with his shoulders shaking from quiet sobs.

Nico entered seconds later. He had waited outside.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

I extended my hand.

“Especially now that you’re here.”

He took it and joined our fingers.

For the first time in days, he smiled.

The state women’s prison was not a place Valentina Rossi had imagined seeing from the inside.

Gray walls, orange uniforms, and the odor of cheap disinfectant mixed with despair stripped away the individuality of a woman who had once controlled elegant dining rooms and charity galas.

The environment was not the worst part.

The worst part was the silence of a telephone that rarely rang, the absence of the visits she expected, and the knowledge that even her imprisonment had awakened nothing in Nico beyond cold indifference.

Liam finally visited 2 weeks after her detention.

They sat on opposite sides of a metal table in the visiting room, separated by a distance that felt more emotional than physical.

Dark circles marked Liam’s face. His shoulders had curved beneath the collapse of everything around him.

“Mom,” he said. “How could you?”

Valentina extended her hands, but he instinctively withdrew his.

The rejection appeared to hurt her more than anything the lawyers or prosecutors had said.

“You need to understand. I did it for us. I was trying to stop that woman from destroying our family.”

Her voice was urgent.

“Your father no longer loves you because of her. Luna poisoned him against us and everything we built.”

“You paid criminals to abduct her.”

Liam struck the table.

“She could have died. How was that for us?”

“Your father needed to understand that the relationship brought only danger, chaos, and destruction. I was protecting him from himself.”

“You’re insane.”

“No.”

Valentina gripped the table until her knuckles turned white.

“I’m thinking clearly for the first time in years. There is still time to repair this.”

“How?”

“Give him an ultimatum. Tell him he has to choose his family, his son, and the life you shared for 30 years, or a woman he has known for several months.”

She leaned closer.

“Make him understand what he is losing.”

“He already chose her.”

“Because you never pressured him strongly enough.”

Her voice rose, drawing attention from the guards. She lowered it again.

“You are his son and share his blood. That has to matter. Force him to choose officially and publicly. Either us or her.”

“What if he chooses her anyway?”

For 1 moment, Valentina remained silent.

Her expression hardened.

“Then you will know where you stand. The mask will finally fall, and you can move forward knowing you did everything possible.”

Liam watched his mother and saw, perhaps for the first time, not the elegant and powerful woman who had raised him but someone broken and desperate, clinging to a toxic hope.

He had always been weak, however, and a lifetime of manipulation could not be undone within several weeks.

“Okay,” he said, despising himself for agreeing. “I’ll try.”

2 days later, Liam arrived at Nico’s house without warning.

Rocco admitted him reluctantly because Nico had instructed the staff that Liam remained his son and could enter despite everything that had happened.

Nico sat in the living room reading documents.

He raised his eyes when Liam entered. There was no warmth in them, but neither was there the complete coldness reserved for Valentina.

“I wasn’t expecting you.”

“We need to speak honestly.”

Nico indicated the sofa.

“Sit.”

Liam sat near the edge as though prepared to leave immediately.

Silence remained between them, dense with everything they had failed to say and everything that might no longer be repaired.

“I visited Mom.”

“I expected you would.”

“She’s destroyed. I know what she did was terrible and probably unforgivable, but she’s my mother.”

He swallowed.

“You’re my father. I feel as though I’m losing both of you.”

Nico passed his hand over his face.

“Your mother made choices, Liam. Choices carry consequences. I can’t—”

“Please.”

Tears entered Liam’s eyes.

“Choose us. Choose your family. Luna will understand. She can find someone else. I only have 1 father, and we have only 1 family.”

“Luna is not replaceable.”

Nico’s voice became harder.

May you like

“Am I?”

Liam’s voice broke.
